I have one thing to say about the "New" TV Guide....

R

....It's alright. But I wish they would've kept it the way it is.

This one now features:

"Previously on"(recaps of prime time shows like "Lost" and "Desparate Housewives")

A daily movie guide

"The 'HOT' list"(which showcases the 21 shows you have to see)

"The Numbers"(Weekly ratings for the top 20 shows)

What's Ranking and Tanking(Shows that are hot and those that are not)

Insider(New faces, Old favorites, New trends)

Radar(Stuff we can't live without, like items that were featured on current TV shows)

Guest columnist(This one has Ellen Degeneres)

Sudoku(A new puzzle featured in the crossword section)

The listings grid features daytime listings for basic and premium cable(12Noon-8PM/11AM-7PM) and late night lisings for basic cable(11PM-5AM/10PM-4AM) and premium/movie channels(11PM-7AM/10PM-6AM) only.

No daytime network listings for ABC, CBS or NBC, including the morning news shows, but the 6 networks(along with I/Pax and PBS) are featured in prime time grids(8-11PM/7-10PM), complete with highlights of the nights' upcoming episodes however. Plus no topics or synopsis for first-run syndicated fare like "Oprah" and "Dr. Phil".

However they did kept some of the features from the old version, like "Cheers & Jeers", "Hits & Misses" and the crosswords.

Like I said its alright, but they could do better. At least they didn't turn this one into another "Entertainment Weekly".

What's wrong with EW? They practice real journalism over there. The new TV Guide, on the other hand, is as light and fluffy as "In Touch Weekly" or "Star." I remember once upon a time TV Guide had real news and real reporting on the TV industry. Sigh. Guess those days are long gone.

Meanwhile, the design of the new book is horrible as well. Looks like a clown barfed on it -- what's with the slap-dashed, haphazard use of color all over the place? It's a mess. There's no real design cue here. It's pretty sad.

As are the listings. No listings at all before noon -- and none on Saturday before 8 p.m. or Sunday before 7 p.m.!! I get it, they're sending people to the website and the on-screen guide.. but sheesh, they could have added a *tad* more!

And Ty Pennington for the first cover?

Just got my new "improved" TV Guide in the mail. I have to say they went & did it. Just ruined it. No local listings at all. Really that was the only reason why I got it. The articles I can get in People or Entertainment Weekly. And I really don't care about the people they are writing about in the first place.

You know, it used to be fun to travel and pick up another edition of TV Guide.
I used to look forward to it arriving every Wednesday. The limited articles that were in it were at least interesting and for the most part had something to do with the TV industry. The TV listings were near perfect both in accuracy and content.

I don't consider myself a "geek" about TV Guide. It was just a little something I enjoyed and now they ruined it.

I don't mind EW too much myself, although sometimes their reviews go to a point where the reviewer's too-hip attitude can get in the way. As for an example of their reportage, last week's "News & Notes" section had a very well written and well explained profile on the "Head Cases" cancellation and how some shows (old and new) can get tons more in the promotion budget than their weaker siblings. You've never seen that kind of explanation in TV Guide, at least not in many years. The EW photography is top notch, in my opinion.

Thank you for the warning. I haven't seen the new TV Guide where I live yet, but I'm fearful the redesign will leave it even more of a clone of People/US Weekly/In Touch/et cetera than the digest-sized version became in recent years.

Really? No daytime listings for the weekend? You would think the discontinued local listings could open things up a little for a detailed weekend national sports schedule. (Or do they at least have that?)

> And Ty Pennington for the first cover?

Well, TV Guide took a sledgehammer to itself, so Ty is a perfect choice... although it would make even more sense if the new issue has some sort of an "Extreme Home Makeover" profile.

Used to do the same thing when I had the opportunity. No more. I considered the magazine officially dead and buried last week, with the last edition with local listings.

Me too. I have stacks of Old TVGuides that may not be worth anything monetarily, but they are super-valuable to me.

I used to pick up editions from other areas in my frequent travels. Heck, I used to even collect the "Channels Listed In" pages by either picking them up myself or writing to several TV stations around the country. (How else would I have got the Hawaii Edition here in Connecticut?) The last time I was able to do this was with the Central Pennsylvania Edition, bought at a Rite Aid Pharmacy in Scranton, PA back on June 5, 2004. The page was done away with a few weeks later. As for "TV Guide" now, I will be letting my subscription run out this Christmas. Radnor, PA? You've lost another subscriber!

It does. In page 22 Pennington talks about teaming up with TV Guide to do a "Extreme Makeover" on the Teas family home and their Camp Barnabas(a Summer camp that provide fun and activities for 1,000 disabled children every year) in Purdy, Missouri. Among the "After" features include the TV Guide Media room, where 10,000 TV Guide Covers were used to decorate the place, including 2,970 covers used as wallpaper. Even the chairs were made out of TV Guides.

The New TV Guide Is Trash. Will Go Under In A Year

What a piece of tabloid trash the new TV Guide is.
Seems more like some Teen trash mag.
They should be ashamed of the abomination.
I give it a year at most. Canceled my subscription but they sent me a copy of the new trash anyway. They must be desparate to put out this Gar-barge which is exactly where I am putting my copy with the other junk mail I receive.

There are no local TV listings?
How can they do that?
That is what TV Guide is for!

I agree -- but TVG took a foolhardy step of whittling down over 100 editions to only two -- Eastern and Pacific (nuts to the other time zones). This follows previous foolhardy steps to local listings and editorial content, leading to TVG losing circulation and blaming it on something else.

I never seen the new TVG (I stopped reading it entirely last year), but I have a feeling that TVG will either (a) undo the changes or (b) fold soon.

My guess would be fold. I got my "new" edition of the TV guide yesterday and threw it in the trash. I did not pay for a year of TV Guide to be handed this crap.

If there are any classic TV Guide collectors, like me, hold on to what you got. If not already, these mags will be worth more money now that the industry has release a version of TV Guide that's no different that Entertainment Weekly or People.
I'll go for the classics, when TV Guide actually cared about providing the readership with local listings (from 5 am to 4 am daily). If anyone care to explain the decrease in circulation, let me turn one's attention to the fact that at some point, perhaps 2-3 years ago, the long-time TV G format changed to eliminate comprehensive daytime listings and on weekends, listings before 9 am local time. Outrageous, ay? Yes...no more buying new TV Guides...
______________

I saw this piece of garbage at the local Wal-Mart earlier today. Not impressed. I'm better off going online to find the TV schedules. RIP, TV Guide.
______________
