I have seen it all

On baisc cable channel Turnner Classic Movies. The showed nudity when they were showeing the 1972 movie boxcar bertha. I thought they were not allowed to show nudity on basic cable. I saw a womens breasts and nipples in at least 1 sceen. I thought the the nudity would have been edited out.

OMG, a breast, a nipple!

Whats better for the eyes?

a. showing a female breast?
b. showing a fat guy with shirt off at NFL game?

I choose a.

In other countries, "b" would be considered distasteful. :)

So true. A 36 year old movie with a --gasp-- bare breast. Surely the downfall of civilization if people are to see female nipples from time to time.

There are no FCC rules regarding nudity, profanity or other 'mature' content on cable shows, including the basic tier. It's all self-policing. Watch one of FX's original shows, like "Nip/Tuck," which has it all, or Comedy Central, which lets fly with the F-bombs after midnight.

It's nice to see a classic film channel that doesn't rip films to shreds, ala censoring, changing aspect ratio (pan and scan) and other things not originally intended by the filmmaker. AMC still butchers many of their movies in this way.

what is wrong with this country? if you were watching the same channel and saw horrible violence, would it evoke the same shocked response?

Sorry to hear you're appalled about Turnner showeing nudity in a sceen from a movie on baisc cable.

Despite the much-deserved grief as Ted took during his "colorization" kick, I applaud the folks at Turner Classic Movies for vowing to never edit a film for time, content, etc., or even show an already-edited version if the unedited original is available -- and then STICKING TO IT for all these years.

Fully agree with the TCM fans. If I could have only two cable stations they'd be HIST and TCM.

In the early days of the movie ratings system (late 60s), Shelley Winters ridiculed it on Johnny Carson, saying:

"What kind of stupid ratings system is this? If you slash a breast, you get an 'R', but if you kiss it, you get an 'X'!"

The analogy isn't apt. When one sees violence, no matter how graphic, that isn't real. When you see exposed body parts they are real (plastic surgery notwithstanding).

I have no problem with nudity or even violence as long as it's rated as such. I mean really we have a rating system and as long as it's reasonably accurate that should be guideline enough

agree...violence (blood) is fake. sex (boobies) were real back in the day.
besides, fake violence sells so much better than real sex.
and "real" sex is taking a hit with all the new software
available for the porn distributors (MSNBC says so).
even Law&Order revealed the pixel problem.

Or The Shield, which has got the THE most violent show on all of television (Even surpassing its rival 24 on the big FOX network, which itself pushes the envelope).

Cheers ;)

Fake or real, violence is violence. Even if you know the gun is not loaded and the blood spurting is fake, its still made to look real, and that has desensitized us to violence. I have seen some horribly violent things in movies where I had to look away,, but I see kids in the theater that can watch the same gory content and not bat an eyelash, they even laugh. Sorry gang, that scares me about the next generation. Violence to them is "fake" yet this must be the most violent generation in our history. Kids recording gang beatings and stuff like that,,, thats the result of glorifying violence.

Are you serious? ::) So you can't decipher the difference between TCM/IFC and AMC? The "TV-MA" rating wasn't a tip-off, either?

If I hadn't already known about the film, just the title, "Boxcar Bertha", and the lead actors, Barbara Hershey and David Carradine, would have told me volumes, as in, this ain't no Disney movie!

I've always liked Barbara Hershey, and David Carradine is one of those precious few actors who's gotten better with age, but I didn't like Boxcar Bertha. Not among their proudest achievements.

That's not an automatic guarantee of the content. I've seen TCM give movies that were rated PG in theaters a TV-MA rating because of PG rated language. It happened with Back to the Future, for one example.
