So how did Californian Fogerty get it into his head that this is how people from somewhere along the Mississippi River pronounce it? Or is he singing from the perspective of a New Yorker aboard a Mississippi River riverboat?
Well, not officially, but it still managed to chart #39 in 1966. The Hot 100 was a singles chart then.
It was the B-side to "Wouldn't It Be Nice". Occasionally, B-sides charted as singles in those years, due to popularity. Many Beatles records and of course, the King's 1956 double-sided smash "Hound Dog" / "Don't Be Cruel" are great examples of successful double-sided hits.
On the other hand, "More Than a Woman" in early 1978 was a soundtrack cut that did not chart on the 100, but received tons of airplay.
