I hope that CBS Radio keeps the Phillies in 2012

I think that CBS Radio should keep the Phillies in 2012 and beyond. I also hope that the games remain on WPHT.

I hope CBS radio keeps the phillies too because if Greater Media gets them and puts them on 97.5/950, that will suck because WPEN (AM and FM) come in weaker than WPHT in Coatesville for me. My dream coverage for Phillies games would be the FM/AM simulcast with WYSP-FM and WIP-AM. YSP has the best Philly FM signal for me and WIP has the best Philly AM signal for me here.

I hope CBS gets rid of the Phillies or puts them on another station so that, between 990 and 1210, Philadelphia has at least one general-interest talk station on the air at any given time in deficient Market # 8.

I hope CBS repairs 1210 into the 50 kw blowtorch it's supposed to be, moves its local sports format over there, keeps the Phillies with it, and moves the syndicated political talk to 610.

Some things that might wanted to be considered. The PPM shows WIP getting higher ratings that WPHT, even WIP online showed up with 35,000 listeners during this latest ratings period. Next thing to consider, which station has more local spots? My guess is WIP, but I don't know that, but maybe someone here does know which station is doing better local spot wise.

The point I'm trying to make is, maybe CBS radio is happy with how well WIP is doing both ratings wise and local spot wise. Also WIP being Philly's main sports talk station gets that truly desired demo of young men, possibly making WIP a money maker for CBS radio's Philly cluster. In the Philly market, the sports talker gets better ratings than the two commercial news/talkers, only non-comm NPR WHYY-FM gets higher ratings with their news/talk/information format. CBS also owns KYW so they already have the full time news market sewn up and in the #1 spot to boot.

WPHT sort of is becoming Philly's live and local full service news/talk station again, sort of like Baltimore's WBAL and Wilmington's WDEL. Both dropped Rush/Hannity a few years ago and went totally live and local daytime talk. Both do local news and carry major league baseball (WBAL is the flagship for the Orioles and WDEL is a Phillies affiliate). Both WBAL and WDEL are the highest rated with solid local spot load of any news/talk station in their respective markets. Yes WPHT still carries Rush, but other than Limbaugh's three hours, the rest is live and local with local news and major league baseball. As this format change at WPHT is only a couple of months old, it may be too soon to tell if it will grow WPHT's audience, but I believe both WBAL and WDEL did see increases in their respective ratings after going live and local talk.

It just seems to me that WIP is doing fine and WPHT is where the tweaking is being done to make it a better performer. Some here may have far better insight into the real story at WIP and WPHT.

Weekdays, for half of the day (12.5 hours) at WPHT, the talk format is now locally originated (although that doesn't necessarily mean that the topics are local).

Nah. Afternoon drive (4 to 7PM) is Smerconish's four hour old national show, and overnights are George Noory's ubiquitous loonfest.

[/quote] 1210 needs to do something about that. They need to air something live during 3-7 PM Monday-Friday.

If what you said is correct, I've heard Smerconish on WPHT, but didn't realize it wasn't live or local, then I agree with you that airing a 4 hour old taped national show (it must be on live opposite of Rush) is a waste and WPHT listeners deserve better. Isn't Smerconish still in Philly? If so, why doesn't he do a live local show for Philly? If he's somewhere else now, then WPHT, in my opinion, should drop his taped show and get some dynamic local host to cover that PM drive time. That's lousy for a market #8 talk station to be airing a pre-recorded show during either drive time. It's not live and local if you're on the bird or if it's pre-recorded. Good point Julius, thanks for the clarification.

Actually, Smerconish does do a live and local program on WPHT - but only from 3-4 PM. The content that airs from 4-7 PM is a pre-recorded feed of his syndicated show, which indeed broadcasts opposite Rush. The last hour of which is being pre-empted by Phillies pre-game, anyway.

My prediction is that by next January, WPHT will already have a new local or (at the very least) live host and send Smerconish packing.

Doesn't make any sense. 1210 needs to solve this, now.

I think what you predict makes sense, hopefully that won't keep them WPHT from doing it. Of course, what's probably keeping WPHT from doing anything now is they have to wait till the end of the contract with Smerconish. Unless Michael brings in huge ratings and plenty of local spots, then all bets are off.
