HI everyone......first off, it is very romantic to read all the fine details of what the fcc rules are and how apparently everyone of us are violating them..............this is, in my opinion very far from the truth.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>The reality is: if you put what you feel is very close to a part 15 am or fm on the air (yep, not talking about pirates who do put 1-1,000 watts on the air),and you do not interfere with any commercial or educational station, nor your neighbors microwave oven, you do not come close to being visited by the FCC or in hearing from a disturbed neighbor.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Property owners situations are different; there may be a rule stating you can not have an antenna in such a community, and if so, apparently need to abide by it; if you were a commercial broadcaster you may be able to get around that, but, in fact we are not commercially licenced units.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>I value what the engineers on here are saying;..they are simply (in their own way) trying to keep you out of trouble) but the fact is and this was stated in the posts below that 99% of part 15'ers don't have the equipment to insure their broadcasts exceed not more than exactly 200 feet, as an example....again, if you are not interfering with any other station or unit in your area, it is not likely that you will have a visit from the FCC....>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Lets say you do enjoy a visit from the FCC: be proud and show them your installation!!! Point out exactly what you are doing and how you are doing it......if it is a bit off legality, they will surely point it out and offer suggestions on how to get it legal......it is the people who defy the FCC that get in trouble, NOT the people who want to work with them. And that is a good thing for everyone.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>The FCC will not come knocking at your door because your 100mW was heard as they passed thru your town.....they may listen and look at it, but that is about it. It is the stupid broadcaster that (for example) plops his part 15 on 770kHz when down the road from WABC in NJ. But then, he wouldn't be heard, would he?>>>>>>>>>>I feel that the board is overreacting. The rules are the rules and as long as you live by them as closely as possible, the FCC isn't going to come into your house with boxes ready to swipe your transmitter and turntables.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>So many things are happening with broadcasting now (HD radio is a good example) that people putting on very small radio stations are not a real FCC pain-in-the-neck unless they are doing damage to a commercial broadcaster who notices and turns you in.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>I think there are part 15 stations both am and fm that are indeed illegal in the sense of the rules, but indeed, with power close to what they are supposed to put out, the range and the ability to interfere with a commercial station still is not too doable. 99% of part 15ers, and I've spoken with a good many of them, are legal as the egg is oval.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Important: About a year ago, the question came up (as this question goes on thread after thread about legality) about kits. WE had received and posted a letter from a FCC agent saying that as long as the kits performed like the accepted unit (Rangemaster) that they were legal. Over and done with.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>The coil that I build doesn't add to the length of the antenna, and if it did, we are talking about inches. Add to that that the antenna, while legally 3 meters long, will not be adjusted to that height!!...it will be shorter, and that happens time after time, so I can't see how our part 15 am antenna is any longer than 9.5 feet tall at any length! (in fact, it is shorter!!).>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>I can appreciate the engineers coming on here and talking about the rules but in doing so, they are scaring potential part 15'ers off the air before they even attempt to get on the air!!!...people not adept at that type of engineering they are talking about are scared silly because they don't understand what is being posted. The future of AM radio will be community based and while not easier than FM to do, it is the easiest way to get a good signal on the air to serve the community they want to serve.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>If by chance a part 15'er did set up a station that was very illegal, and it is HIGHLY doubtful with the equipment that is available, he could be advised to adjust it....the danger occurs when someone chooses to ignore the broadcasting rules, but like I said that is a very small percentage of people.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Lastly, I would not build and sell to people (who ultimately become friends) a system that is illegal. Why would I endanger myself or my customer? The sstran antenna is a solid, working antenna designed to put out a pretty strong signal from a transmitter that puts out 100mW. There was talk about range:..well, how far does 100mW go?No matter it be a Rangemaster, a SSTRAN, a Metzo, or whatever, 100mW is just that.....1/10th of a watt. It is not 1 watt or a 1000 watts....the Transmitters and antennas are built to make the most of what the best walkie-talkie puts out in terms of power. So, if a poster does get 5 miles of range, he most likely has a very clear frequency and a great location.....and great conductivity to boot.......but a strong mile for most is probable...3 is great but it most likely won't be a strong signal.......anyone who wishes to cover 10 miles with a 1/10of a watt probably does run more power than legal, or dreams of owning a graveyarder.
______________

Carl:

Just a suggestion, howz about using some paragraphs to break up the material a little. You've put a lot of thought into your post and have a lot to offer, but damn man ... its super-tough to read through.

Thanks for staying on message.

Just so you know, for the hundredth time, the Carl Antenna Guy has a WebTV system and it's the system that's semi-illiterate, not Carl.

Yes, this has been discussed MANY MANY times. There basically isn't much that can be done about that issue.
______________

Hello all,

Good thoughts Carl.

I have been doing part 15 AM for over fourty years. I have kept a low profile, been as legal as I could determine, and have NEVER had any trouble from anyone due to my broadcasts. When I was in high school, I even had listeners! They thought it was really neat that the kid next door could do this.

Keep it as legal as you can, be responsible, and have fun.

Neil

Thanks for the info. Might be the hundreth time for you, but its the first time for me... I'll just strain my eyes a little more in the future.
