The Calls I could do without, but the station, Yes its a winner in my book.
I like the way the whole programming day is set,Yes I know they have a lot of
sydicated programming, but what talk station doesnt, Wsb, has locals, but they go by a syndicated clock. I hope they continue to stay just the way they are...

Just curious: What's wrong with the calls? They are almost heritage; I believe they started in the late '50s on 1600.

Sure did...when they played classical music on WGKA. I think they were located on West Peachtree if I remember. Owned by Baker Audio???

I think they are classy call letters. I sure wouldn't change them.

1955 was the year they debuted...a 1kw daytimer on 1600, along with FM on 92.9. The call letters stand for "GlenKaren Associates", the licensee. Locke Glenn was the owner.

WGKA moved to 1190 in the mid-60's, still with 1kw-D. The 1600 frequency ended up in Austell. WACX went on the air in 1968.

The stations were sold in 1971 to GCC Communications (General Cinema Corporation), owned by Alec Tanger (movie theatres and the Tanger Outlet Malls). The ownership change brought the debut of WZGC(Z-93), and the end of classical music on commercial FM in Atlanta. Tanger also owned WEFM/Chicago, WGCL/Cleveland, and WIFI/Philadelphia.

WGKA has only around since 1955? I didn't know that. At least they're still hanging around at 920 AM.
