I Juuuust Don't Believe it!!

How in the Hell could 97.1 pick up those kind of numbers???
This is the same ol' worn out, soda cracker crap we have been hearing for years. To be more precise....even if you STILL listen to Dino-rock, this is just a completely uninspiring attempt at radio programming.
IS ANYONE EVER going to attempt something innovative in terrestial radio? In this cumulative programming effort, can we not find one man/woman with a different idea(s)which the suits and bean counters will try and buy?
When the industry lauds Bob Neil(Cox Radio CEO)as a "genius," and this is the "compelling entertainment" the "genius" comes up with, we have evidence of an industry in decline. Or maybe it's the sure sign of a culture and civilization in decline.
We desperately need programmers and operators who understand the concept of "showbiz" better than the mechanics of auditorium research. Time is running out for radio!

Easy, find a hole, spend $500k in media, and enjoy the fact that Atlanta embraces new...for awhile. the test will be as it was for "dave"...how long it will last. if it does, they deserve praise.

Their marketing strategy must have really worked, because they are doing almost the same exact thing as 96rock---only 96rock is doing it much bigger and better.

I'll tell you how, but you must remember, there is more than one way for this to happen.
#1--Arbitron--These crack smoking meth toking pill popping holier than any body else in the world own a monopoly on the only way most of us(radio)can ever get the #'s. Who cares if the numbers are accurate, we must have those NUMBERS! So arbitron sends out 50 books to a county with a population of 200,000; then 30 books go out to a county of over 100,000 people. Now a little further over to the West our friends at arbitron decide to send 10 books to Carroll County,,,
I think you get the picture. Then 1 person from the family keeps the arbitron book for the entire family the entire week. Is that the way Arbitron wants it to work. Hell Know. But what can they do about it at this point the horse is already out of the barn. So let's call her a 14 year old female that fills out the entire book while listening to Star 94 for one of the families in Carroll County. Now depending the next family allowing their 17 year old son to fill there book all about 96 Rock. Are you following along? because at this point 20% of Carroll County is listening to Star and Rock. And Heaven help the madness if a couple more families allow their pre-teens, teens, or twenties age chidren living in their house to fill out the rest. This is just the tip of the iceberg, Arbitron was the way in it's day. However that day has long since been passed. But still no changes to their methods.Arbitron you know you can't deliver adequate numbers of listeners for any Radio Station any where.Arbitron, you know you deliver the highest numbers to the corporate stations that can afford to pay you the highest fee. this sounds an awful lot like payola to me. which we broadcasters all know is illegal, we would lose our jobs and the stations would be fined by the FCC and they would be within their right to maybe even pull the station license.
I could go on for days, but that's enough for now. I'll be more than happy to take questions at any time.

you may address me as "Uncle Rich" now, Let's Get It On!!!!!!!!

Oddly enough, there just might be truth in advertising, my friends.

Remember all those TV ads Cox ran for 97.1, and the buzz it got in the news for the ads? Well, it probably suckered some of these folks that have the books to say.....(in my best "Larry The Cable Guy" voice)"Uhh, well I guess dats wut day call dem guys dees days. Ahl rite it down rite heer." while actually listening to another station........In addition to Arbitron taking some under the table as my collegue's VERY long post stated.

It's like this news article I read the other day about celebrity death rumors. Did you know that Will Farrel died a few weeks ago while parasailing? Well, some "Hollywood Insider" site made that statement, and, before they could retract it since Will's actually in Canada shooting a movie, the story spread like wildfire.

Personally, I can't stand "The River", which is a dumb name, too. It's too soft to really be called a rock station and too hard to be called AC. I really think they should've called it "B98 Rock", which is what it really is.

Part of the answer lies in many people's thoughts that ANYTHING was better than Jamz. Add the growing hunger for oldies & classic rock (and Z93 flipping to Dave), and you've got some numbers. Time will tell.

Also, if you want to save the money you're spending on oldies jocks, you switch to a format foreign to them as an incentive to look elsewhere. If you switched from oldies to classic rock, they wouldn't want to leave. (I believe CC's Kool 105.7 didn't start until Fox 97 flipped.) One can't help but wonder if this was Cox's intention all along, considering the difference in the amount of promotion between Jamz and The River. (Just a thought.)

The River sounds like more of a combination of classic rock and the "mix" format. There is a lot of that in this market, but 97.1 has positioned itself good enough so it's the first station that comes to mind when I think of "classic rock" in Atlanta (96Rock seems to promote "classic" as an afterthought, and Dave is - well, Dave.).

Which kinda makes you wonder just how many stations in Atlanta are really what they brand themselves to be.....

What the hell are you talking about?

The River is new. They advertised. People are curious. After two months of nothing but music, listening will wither. 96Rock's numbers will rise, because they have an established morning show, TV ads, Braves, and better promotions.

Same as Dave in '05.

As I've said many times; you have to spend money to make money. Spend money on advertising, personalities and fun contests for the listeners. Contests they want to play, listeners want to hear about and best of all, keeps their radios in the same place longer. While Cox hasn't done all of that, they did advertise. By advertising, fans of that music tuned-in. Now they need to spend on the rest, but I doubt they will do so. This will lead to a drop in those numbers and I'm also guessing they will end the 30-second TV spots soon? IPod radio (a radio station that sounds like someone turned on their MP3 player and walked out the door) just doesn't bring the numbers you want. Soon listeners will plug-in their own MP3 player and enjoy an even larger variety with no commercials. Advertising brings the listeners, personalities and fun activities for the listeners keep the numbers high and their radios locked to the station and the numbers go up.<P ID="signature">______________

Lemme see here ... a station that actually plays music instead of some half-wit stand-up comedian wanna-be's? Dang, seems like a pretty novel concept in Atlanta these days.

Their playlist is both too narrow to suit me personally & quite a bit too far to the light side for my personal taste, too close to an AC with their Elton John obsession in particular ... but having watched them become my wife's P1 for music from their very first weekend (probably getting close to dead even with AM 750 for her overall total listening), I can't really say I'm surprised by them putting up some numbers.

By comparison to the rest of the market, they're the most listenable music format in the city right now for quite a few people. I'd say that's probably pretty close to the proverbial "damning with faint praise", but being the least crappy option among a lot of crappy options is almost certain to generate a pretty decent number, especially in their target demo.
