I know this supposed to be about Atlanta...

But how can there be so many stations in florida with the call letters, WFLA? Google the call sign, there's at least 4!

BD

This is supposed to be about Atlanta, yet there IS a Florida board here.

Only three stations truly have the call letters WFLA. 970 WFLA, 100.7 WFLA (which is WFLA-FM), and NewsChannel 8 (WFLA-TV). 540 WFLA in Orlando has the calls WFLF, and 94.5 WFLA in Panama City has the calls WFLF-FM. You can brand yourself whatever you want, as long as you identify properly. Other examples include 99.7 WTN (calls are WWTN) and 94.3 WSC (calls are WSCC).

Well.. I don't know if I'm in trouble or not...

but I don't think I have ever heard of a station "calling" itself something that sounds a lot like a call sign, when its not really the call sign of the station. I mean, would WSB call itself Newsradio WGST.. or would WGST call itself AM750 WGST?
Really strange if you ask me

Well of course not because they're in the same markets and under different ownerships. You can't use the same branding as another station locally. Much like how Cox can't set up a station called Viva. All those WFLAs are in different cities. Heck, soon there will be a network of over 15 stations in New England calling themselves WEEI.

There was a radio station in Illinois (IIRC) that changed their call letters to WSBX-AM and went with the same brand as our WSB... News/Talk 750 WSB (dropping the X)

Before the state abreviations were standardized to 2 letters, "FLA" was the abbreviation for Florida (I don't know how old you are, so I threw that in.). Anyway, if you are a company that wants to brand itself as "blanketing" Florida - especially for the tourists - you would pick heritage calls like "WFLA" and use them to the max.

WFLA/970am and WFLA-TV/8 cover Tampa Bay, WFLA/100.7FM covers Talahassee, WFLF/540AM covers Orlando and WFLF/94.5FM covers Panama City. All stations are owned by Clear Channel.

If you post this on a Florida board (if you haven't done so already), you will probably get more help. ;)

Guys,

thanks for the replies, I was just really looking for opinion on the subject.. it doesn't matter really. Even when the stations are in different markets, seems kinda tacky to me.

Actually, WFLA-TV is owned by Media General. Originally it was part of a cluster with WFLA and WFLA-FM (which is now WFLZ-FM), and they were all owned by Tribune. Tribune sold WFLA/WFLA-FM/WFLA-TV to what is now Media General, and Media General sold WFLA and WFLA-FM to Jacor Broadcasting and kept WFLA-TV.

Here's a blurb about WFLA-TV in Wikipedia:

"The station was renamed WXFL-TV in 1983 after the WFLA radio stations were sold, but regained its old call letters in 1989. (Both stations are currently owned by Clear Channel Communications.)"

I guess the "both stations currently owned" means both the radio stations instead of both the radio and TV station. :-\ Real clear there.
