I lost respect for B101

I heard TC voicetracking during the late morning. I'm sure he's a nice guy and all but I think they are just better off just playing music without the voice tracking.

Just my opinion,

I then flip to 99.7 (WPRO's simulcast).I am tired of hearing Joe the Barber. It seems he's on the air just as much as the hosts. So after getting sick of hearing Joe the Barber I go back to B101 at 12:15 to hear "Playground in my mind" on a station that plays cuts from Bon Jovi's "Slippery when wet".

I am running out of options in Providence radio

Maybe it's some kind of request hour, most stations seem to have them at noon.

Try satellite radio. It's really a great alternative. I have Sirius in my house. 134 stations total. If you want oldies.... it is oldies you will get. You will also get all music channels commercial free. My radio has 10 presets. This is what I've programmed into them.

1. Howard 100
2. Sirius Stars 102
3. CNN
4. Fox Talk network
5. Sirius Gold - 50's Music
6. 60's Vibrations - 60's music
7. Totally 70's
8. Big 80's
9. The Pulse - Music from the 90's and Today
10 Lithium - 90's Alternative

Here is a complete channel list:

You don't need to be a slave to local radio anymore. Get a taste of satellite and see if it's right for you. It sure makes up for what Providence radio lacks.

@Kenwood101, sorry to hear your fustrations regarding that matter. I'm from Boston but visited there back in 2003, back then on 1340am and 1450am they used to have an 24/7 Classic Soul format from ABC Radio Networks in Dallas, Texas
That Classic Soul format got disregarded around 2004/2005

Now (2008) on 1340am and 1450am they have "Timeless Favorites" from ABC Radio Network in Dallas, Texas.
They play THE BEST!!!!!!! Sof Rock from 60s, 70s, 80s, and early 90s as well as some 1950s music
Try that station when you have a free moment 1340am or 1450am

thank you

Just so everyone knows. I have the out most respect for TSJ.I know him personally. I know his hands are tied on a lot of the music decisions on the Bee. This is mostly a corporate slam.

Thank you

Well, I haven't lost respect for the B-dudes...two of them are old buddies (although I think we all don't think of ourselves as that 'OLD' yet)...and they still keep the tunes cookin'. Yeah, they're not the same old B101, but they do have some great music on the playlist. And yes, you are going to hear more of the fashion disaster decade on oldies (that's the 80s, folks) because the music now goes back that far...

...and yet, how many of you are fond of stations like the ever beloved WLNG/Sag Harbor NY? They've got the biggest tunes list and a library spanning some 60 years...that means they play recent tunes too...and yet we who listen really like what they do.

Friends of mine who yap with me about this stuff believe that if you had a 50s-late 80s format arise you'd get a strong, loyal audience...having done this biz for 30+ years now the people who listen and the party crowd at events have convinced me by their requests that the R&R / Pop / Soul stuff is just as alive and wanted as ever. I'll get people itching to hear 'Lipstick On Your Collar' as much as they want Marcia Griffiths (Electric Boogie a.k.a. 'The Electric Slide').

Must also recognize the oldies angst among us...even I have a touch of it...ideally to get that 40-year spread in a great mix 24-hrs. a day would be ideal, packing the playlist with things folks tend not to touch as well but fits perfectly...one would never be bored listening, and that was the direction Hartford's DRC-FM 102.9 was aiming toward a year or two ago.

That's the utopia I find with the oldies music popping up on Long Island stations and the great CHWO 740/Toronto (akin to 1450 in W. Warwick, owned by Hall Communications and part of their soft adult fare but with more life to it). Our oldies passion is more 'vibrant'...these tunes were kitchy, catchy, sometimes intense, sometimes just fun...creative little ditties we still can't get out of our heads. The tunes need DJs who reflect their personality which is why the oldies powerhouses still around are behind the mikes for the most part (thankfully).

Every time my B101 bud Mark Ambrose gets to playing ELO cuts, he cranks up his headphones, I crank up the radio, and two ELO fans 'B-come 1 with the music'...(ok, Mark, don't fall off your chair laughing... ::))

Not to throw in another shameless plug, but part of that oldies equation exists on my Sunday 6-11am show (winyradio.com or AM 1350 for those closer to the CT border). Big Broad Brush of oldies, including 'roots' stuff dating back to the late 40s, through the 60s. Yeah, there are 70s hits I'd love to toss in too, but for now we're groovin' on this gig and happy to be doing it too.

Part of the problem with B101 too is that there is no energy behind it. I mean, how can you be energetic when most of the day is voicetracked? But the real problem is the management, not the jocks themselves.

OK, that's a fair assessment, but it is also fair to say that most radio station personalities aren't allowed to be personalities. That's a part of radio which has been lost for years now. The 'names' we all remember are mostly from the older R&R days because they were equally important to us as was the music...and you'll find on most of the oldies or talk formats the announcers are still pretty much personalities, having a name that carries history and some weight these days.

Oldies radio thrives on the effervescent combination of music and jock...they are hopelessly married to one another and any diminishing return on this format usually occurs when the jocks can't have fun and connect with the audience. Somewhere from some guru out there in obscurity, management got the idea that people wanted less announcing, more music...and look what happened: automated formats with no live people, duplicity of 'cookie cutter' stations where all that is different is the call sign, the lack or total absence of local programming, especially NEWS (which folks learned quickly on 9/11/01 must not be sacrificed...well, they learned it then and have abandoned it, again).

Chunks of this industry gave up being the 'forefront' of people's day and opted for 'background' positioning in homes and offices; guess it was to get the bragging rights that 'we're heard on more radios than any of our competitors'...hmmm...
Hearing usually involves Listening, and people will listen to what they want / need to hear. I bet if the background gang put the personality back, more and more people would actually know two things: what's on by call sign and who they're listening to...ya think? But, here's the other problem: most DJs today are trained to be automatons, lacking personality and (basic!!!) understanding of the area around them. The talented ones have to be creative in corners of this industry like the web or community/college radio.

Simply put: most radio in our youth was FULL SERVICE programming and so were the DJs; we've graduated (or dummied down) to SELF-SERVICE now and the octane level can barely rev up our engines. Proof: I, radio guy for 30+ years and plugged into this medium since the age of 3 (50 now folks) get excited about a format and station IN TORONTO, ONTARIO (am740.ca)...so I know better what's going on with traffic on the 401 or Canada's Parliament these days than about the job situation at EB, Pfizer, RI State Capitol or traffic on I-95 or the 6/10 connector....eh? (Oops, that slipped out too that piece of Canadian influence).

How many of you are grazing the www for formats and 'clued in' announcers that are alive again? Oh, here's a homework assignment: WKRP In Cincinnati, yep, the TV show, watch the entire series and get a good stare at TV's version of what made radio great in days gone by...the pop quiz will come up at any time so study hard!!
