Well, I haven't lost respect for the B-dudes...two of them are old buddies (although I think we all don't think of ourselves as that 'OLD' yet)...and they still keep the tunes cookin'. Yeah, they're not the same old B101, but they do have some great music on the playlist. And yes, you are going to hear more of the fashion disaster decade on oldies (that's the 80s, folks) because the music now goes back that far...
...and yet, how many of you are fond of stations like the ever beloved WLNG/Sag Harbor NY? They've got the biggest tunes list and a library spanning some 60 years...that means they play recent tunes too...and yet we who listen really like what they do.
Friends of mine who yap with me about this stuff believe that if you had a 50s-late 80s format arise you'd get a strong, loyal audience...having done this biz for 30+ years now the people who listen and the party crowd at events have convinced me by their requests that the R&R / Pop / Soul stuff is just as alive and wanted as ever. I'll get people itching to hear 'Lipstick On Your Collar' as much as they want Marcia Griffiths (Electric Boogie a.k.a. 'The Electric Slide').
Must also recognize the oldies angst among us...even I have a touch of it...ideally to get that 40-year spread in a great mix 24-hrs. a day would be ideal, packing the playlist with things folks tend not to touch as well but fits perfectly...one would never be bored listening, and that was the direction Hartford's DRC-FM 102.9 was aiming toward a year or two ago.
That's the utopia I find with the oldies music popping up on Long Island stations and the great CHWO 740/Toronto (akin to 1450 in W. Warwick, owned by Hall Communications and part of their soft adult fare but with more life to it). Our oldies passion is more 'vibrant'...these tunes were kitchy, catchy, sometimes intense, sometimes just fun...creative little ditties we still can't get out of our heads. The tunes need DJs who reflect their personality which is why the oldies powerhouses still around are behind the mikes for the most part (thankfully).
Every time my B101 bud Mark Ambrose gets to playing ELO cuts, he cranks up his headphones, I crank up the radio, and two ELO fans 'B-come 1 with the music'...(ok, Mark, don't fall off your chair laughing... :

)
Not to throw in another shameless plug, but part of that oldies equation exists on my Sunday 6-11am show (winyradio.com or AM 1350 for those closer to the CT border). Big Broad Brush of oldies, including 'roots' stuff dating back to the late 40s, through the 60s. Yeah, there are 70s hits I'd love to toss in too, but for now we're groovin' on this gig and happy to be doing it too.
