Oh, K-Hits will NEVER match the sound or even the calibre of KISN, especially the KISN I knew in the late 1980s to the mid-1990s (pre-'96.) Because of serious technical limitations of automation (see also: That taken into account, the same can be said about pretty much ANY automated format post-1996. KGON may play some of the same music KQIV did, but KGON nowdays will never BE KQIV, if you can see what I am getting at (doubtful, but....)

When computers (and to an extent, satellite feeds) helped force actual human beings out of the studio, the quality of radio production went down TREMENDOUSLY. I'm not an expert at radio production, but I call it as I hear it. And in our market it's readily obvious when you tune pretty much anything to the right of 91.9 (possibly the only exception being El Rey......!)

Start bringing actual human life back into the studio and that will all changefor the better. But then again, in today's market this is just wishful thinking, as quantity always wins out over quality (instead of the other way around, as it should be.)

And who knows, with satellite syndication (and the greater evil, Internet Syndication, which I am certain is not too far off if it isn't here already) possibly the very broadcasts we hear will be "MADE IN CHINA" as much as the receivers we listen to them on (at least those who even bother to listen any more.)

But then again, that's precisely why we have public radio. I'd go on a rave about how much I dearly love KBOO and Golden Hours and Evergreen Radio Reading Service and watching OPAN Oregon Channel but that's a different topic for a different thread. ;o)

Are you saying K-Hits is automated? I don't get that feeling. Kool now appears to be so non-automated that its morning and afternoon drive talents encompass the entire day! They must be having fun.

The big shocker to me is the level of talent. When you look at the Portland market, it is one of the more unique places on the planet. There is Saturday Market, an explosion of art and creativity, something you will not find most places, there is artistic expression all over this city, art, acting and so on. The "Keep Portland Weird" campaign. The ma and pa record and book stores all over the area. Portland is a creative place. But, when you turn on the radio, it's like you're listening in Salt Lake City! So many of the air talents are like corporate butlers. Nice and polite and very boring. It is so rare to hear a Portland DJ who does an act, who confronts you with humor and opinion. Why is it like that?
