I-Mediatouch automation

The finalists for our new on-air/production system are I-Media Touch and AudioVault. Would appreciate your real world experiences with these systems - learning curve, reliability, etc. Thank you.

i'd suggest nexgen as a replacement for audiovault.have a friend who runs a cluster with audiovault, a darn computer guru, always having problems with it.hates it...get ready for a real tuff learning curve.i am very impressed with dave scott's captain digital.you may want to cast your votes again.IMHO

MediaTouch real world experience:

Version 2.6.0 is pretty stable. However, the playback uses the Windows Media Player engine. That means Microsoft memory leak issues. Every couple months we have to reboot the on-air machine because one of the media player instances will indicate that it is playing, but there'll be no audio.

Once you understand the system, it is vey easy to set up and get running.

The voicetracking is very easy to use and effective. The production tools are good, but you still want to use an external editor for heavy editing. The built-in editor is workable, though.

The RDS interface is still buggy, but it does what we want it to do and it scrolls the song titles and other info. The bugs are in the dayparted messages section. Looknig forward to that working sometime, though its not critical to us.

The system pulls in RCS Selector logs well, but unfortuntately, it will not merge traffic and music well. OMT's response is that you should use Selector/Linker for merging traffic first. That's great if you have a traffic system that is supported by RCS... SMARTS, ours, isn't.

The jocks like it. It is easy to use and, more importantly, easy to explain how to use.

dudefan, that would scare the hell out of me.i've had Nexgen 2 running 24/7 3 years now.flawless...it is the best there is currently.period.....putting on new fm soon, will probably give captain digital a try.as you may know dave scott is pretty smart.sold his scott studio for millions and then jumped back on with captain digital.he is a digital software guru.

Prophet Systems, even after bargaining, would have been $30,000 for our installation and requirements. Way outside the budget. MediaTouch was far less.

Scott Systems was even more expensive than Prophet.

I will add a disclaimer to be fair... our single issue that we have may be a hardware/sound card issue and not MediaTouch, itself. Although, given its nature and my experience with Windows Media Player, the problem is likely somewhere in WMP. The On Air module itself hasn't hung.

I may sound like a broken record, but we're going with SuSe Linux/Rivendell for our auxiliary channels. We're running a Linux-based PBX, so the OS doesn't intimidate me and has impressed me with its stability and speed.

How is iMediaTouch with satellite programming? Looking at the knowledge base on their website, it looks incredibly complicated to change every time there is a change.

You might also want to look at On Air Digital’s UDS2 / RadioSuite system, if you have not already done so. The RS server is Linux based and you can use practically any sound card you want. The UDS2 program has rock solid stability, and if something should happen to go wrong, OAD’s support service is available 24/7 365.

We don't run satellite, so I am not sure about how its like to run Sat.

Thanks for the UDS recommendations.

I'm going to put SuSE 10.0/Rivendell on a lab box shortly, so I'll see how I like it.

Generally, I don't need tech support unless the product is documented poorly.

Media Touch itself is pretty stable... but if you intend to have a real presense on the internet and cannot carry the spots you air, their AdCast software (to fill spots on the net) is garbage.

Dudefan, I'd stay away from suse 10.0 with rivendell... If you read the archived mail list you'll see all the problems with that particular release of suse. go with 10.1, or do like evryone within salem and load up 9.3. 9.3 seems to be their "golden standard".

Thanks Desert! I am going to go hunting for the email list. That's the beauty of open source... folks document and publish every issue and workaround!

I have had AudioVault up and running for over 3 years without a hiccup. I WILL SAY that is it is not the easiest to learn / use, but once you get it down, your golden. I have also used NexGen and LOVE it. It is as stable as AV but alot easier to use. I would stay away from MediaTouch for voicetracking, I have heard a lot of negative things. If you are using it for assist, it is fine.
