I might be landing a gig!

Well, Erie, I'm sure it ain't like it used to be.

Just like any other radio conundrum stateside, AFN Radio here has a lot of trouble getting listeners, so they are willing to "push the envelope" a lot more than they used to. Admittedly, you won't ever get a Howard Stern type show on there, but double-entendres flourish wherever they can. This atmosphere might be exclusive to Air Force-run stations (and particularly in-theater, where there are no children listeners), but we have a song in our playlist that apparently is on Current Rock charts that in the first line very obviously suggests someone "going down on" someone. Can't remember the tune or artist right now, but if you follow that format, you've probably heard it.

On the flipside, however, I have heard of a story where an officer's wife (in Italy) decided that even the edited version of Avril Lavigne's "Girlfriend" ahould get the axe and did because of the obvious intent of its lyrics. Again, that's in a family environment so the restrictions become dictated by those in authority.

I myself decided to open the show with "This is the NH Radiochild show. Brought to you by [units I'm associated with]." This, after repeated hourly mentions prompted, someone regularly involved with the station to tell me I shouldn't say that because my unit and division are in no way physically affiliated with the operation of the station. I told him that it was a play on words as I am actually "boots-on-the-ground" here because of their orders. So, suffice it to say, I explained such on the air at the end of the show, and will be retooling my intro to say "infused with Black Dragon pride" as "Black Dragons" is my unit motto. They also didn't really want to be imaged as an "AFN Afghanistan" station, but simply "Freedom radio". That's no biggie, really. I just kind of used it as a way to mix up readers a little bit, because they don't really have any other catch phrases other than "Hits from the Homefront". So, I'll adjust fire for the next show. I also open up the show with "...the BIG show with the LITTLE stick." Yes, I know that dwells in radio-lingo land, but for the audience they can get a kick out of the double-entendre.

Other than that, for those who did listen, (mainly the staff that I can tell), thought I did a good job, which surprisingly already got back to my OIC in my own shop. So at least the word is spreading I guess. :)

BZ's to you, NHRC. be careful what you say "on the air" in regards to your comrades in-theater. for that matter, you should be really careful what you say here, as well. i do believe the broadcast tandem in the cinematic film classic "Major League" reminded us that "less is more." seriously - have fun with your on-air moniker, but don't put your buds in harms way. those who are "not friends" have ways to glean and use personal info in a manner that is not always pleasant. i do believe the phrase "loose lips sink ships" still applies.

have fun. but be sure to check with your station's o.i.c. or p.d. in regard to content each time you're on. make sure you don't put yourself out of a gig.

as the lead Boatswain's mate on my old tin can used to say ... "out - mother-bleeping - standing!" carry on!

Wow! This thread sure has gotten unnecessary complex. I stick to the original simple sentiment. “Congratulations, good luck, welcome back and have fun.

Thanks for the concern, Erie.

I, more than most, know very well of keeping sensitive information off the air, but there is a bit of a tradeoff. You have to be aware of other AFN/media reports which also cover certain things and then judge whether or not your topics fall within that realm or not. So far, mentioning unit names by themselves is within that realm, although describing what they do would be a touchy subject of which I avoid.

There is always the potential for the enemy making a target over what you say. Heck, for all you know, something you may say could already be in their crosshairs. The rule of thumb is, don't mention specific (pinpoint) locations or times that are not readily apparent to those (the broadcast audience) that have the opportunity to witness firsthand and you're set. Oh, that and don't insult the customs of local nationals, which I have no heart to do in the first place.

And yes, I carefully scrutinize what I post here to make sure nothing affecting Operational Security (or OPSEC) is divulged. People will talk, and there are folks out there who are far worse at maintaining OPSEC than myself. I don't position myself as much of a threat to that.

Finally, most deployed transmissions equal about 100W and on rooftops, so the coverage is very minimal to the local national populace. (This can be freely referenced at the MyAFN website, previously posted.)

But thanks again for all your warm responses! And if anyone is a bumper sticker collector, I think I can scrounge up a few "Freedom Radio" stickers and send them out. Just shoot me a message with your address. 8)

i'd like you to consider the input you get from MANY (intentional caps) posters here who try to politely tell you "your fly is open." you more often than not put your foot in mouth and find a way to wrangle the other size 10 in as well.

and to Rudy Martinez - i offer my apologies on behalf my broadcast brother who seemingly has misplaced the minutea that the enigmatic one, he with the Foster Grants, is better known in the "#1 Club" as "Question Mark." as in ... ? & The Mysterians who reached rock's pinacle chart position in 1966 with "96 Tears."

that, argy, was an attempt at humor.

your fly is open. (that is statement, not a question)

Well, Erie...your attempt at humor was pretty feeble! Hopefully, this isn't a reflection of your on-air abilities!

Here's a thought....why don't we just change the name of this board from NORTHERN NEW ENGLAND to the "Erie Lackwanna" review. This way...Erie can become the moderator and all of our posts will be subject to his scrutiny.....grammatical and/or opinionwise!

It's obvious that unless all of us follow his standard of excellence ??? ....our opinions or thoughts don't really matter!

thankfully, i have on-air abilities.

me for KING would be better, thank you.

and it's not ALL OF US - as i've mentioned before in response to your "is it just me?" (with one question mark) - it is you.

the original tangent of my little exchange with you here, Argy, was your wish that all unemployed radio people could be so lucky as NHRC to find on-air work. again - argy - NHRC is in a war zone. in Afghanistan. in the military in a job from which one can not simply resign from if one has a bad program-director day.

why don't you wish for all fellow unemployed radio professionals to be so lucky to come down with a really miserable disease while you're at it? for that is the parallel of what you did.

i don't consider being in a war zone lucky.

however, we should feel lucky and honored that young people such as NHRC do step up and put themselves on the line in service to our country. and that NHRC gets an opportunity to pull an airshift to hone the craft is a bit of a bonus.
