I Miss 70's AM MOR!

Ok, must be a mid-life crisis, but lately I am really longing for the days of my youth, when KDKA-AM played music. Talking about the '70's, when most cars only had AM radio, and all my parents played in the car or in the house was the Big 1020, with your pal and Trish and Jim Horne and whoever else. I just loved the playlists. You could hear Loggins and Messina doing You're Mama Don't Dance followed by Charlie Rich singing the Most Beautiful Girl in the World, followed by a little Stevie Wonder jam or 3 Dog Night Sham-ba-la or Jim Stafford singing Spiders and Snakes or even Dave Mason telling us how there ain't no good guys and there ain't no bad guys. You had crap, too--(who in their right mind could listen to more than 15 seconds of Minnie Ripperton?)

This was before disco and punk and FM dominance and (for me) high school. Great variety of songs, pleasant dj's, unfiltered news on the hour, and who could forget those ads for Gimbels, Winky's and Ameri-can?

How much longer until WJAS starts playing the music of MY life? Lol.

ah yes, the playlist at KD towards the end of their music era was, to say the least, eclectic (like picking random carts out of a barrel while blindfolded). I particularly remember that Sunday morning show that Trish Beatty did. My frequent reaction to the selections being offered was "what was THAT?"

also you mention pleasant DJ's....I do recall that any of the adults that I knew who had ever met Bogut, Pallan or Trish Beatty always said that they found them all to be very pleasant, nice people.

Call me crazy, call me someone who lives in the past, but I like the idea of bringing back MOR back to the AM dial. However, I think it could and should be 'spiced up' a little bit. Toronto's CFZM has some interesting programming. Should someone be brave (or crazy) enough to do this format on an AM station, preferably an AM powerhouse, I'd suggest featuring the softer hits of today while offering uptempo music that won't be too harsh. Avoid much of the disco and 'heavier' rock that many current ACs are now playing. Offer music by modern 'crooners.' At night offer special programming including the following: a show featuring music from the pre-British rock era (as CFZM does on Friday nights), a traditional and/or modern jazz show which could also feature big band music, or some other music which could be appropriate. Of the stations out there, I think WFED Washington could do this as well as WWKB Buffalo. Right now, I can't think of any other AM powerhouses which are getting their butts kicked but this might be something worth looking into.

Either way be sure to check out the CFZM wesite: http://www.am740.ca

There was a long-standing tradition that the host of the Sunday morning show on KDKA picked all the music for the show. That went back to Sterling Yates and continued until Trish did the last Sunday morning music show.

There are 3 signals that would be interesting: 540, currently Radio Disney, can be heard well into Ohio and WV (if it had a night signal it would actually be intersting to see if ESPN could do better there than 1250).... 1080, currently religious, is 50kW 9a-3p and 25kW from sunrise-9 and 3-sunset (but it's essentially a daytimer)... and our old friends at 620 (but again, no night signal).

Check out 960 WHYL Carlisle, PA if you're in the area, or at whylradio.com. Of course there you don't get my 70's processing, but I'm rapidly evolving our standards into a Full Service MOR that right now is playing Chicago "Just You and Me" and could very well play Andy Williams "Happy Heart" next. I think WJAS probably IS playing some of the music of your life!

Peace, BL40

Actually, to the extent that anyone is currently doing a format that sounds like this, 620 comes pretty close between the end of the last medical infomercial and local sundown

620 KHB has a minimal night signal. It's pretty good in the eastern suburbs.

We do play every song mentioned in the original post, even Minnie Riperton.

Clark, if you play Minnie Riperton, how do you keep the transmitter on the air?? ;) :D

How do you keep the fax machine from firing up?

gosh, yes....I'm sure that back in the day, all of the analog meter manufacturers were using Minnie Riperton clips to test them! :D

I really hate it when the studio glass breaks during Minnie Riperton and all the dogs outside start to howl. It's distracting.

;D

I suppose nowadays her stuff causes all the EAS equipment to go haywire?
