I miss Al Brumley

As an outsider, looking in, I really enjoyed reading his weekly article on the DFW radio biz in Sunday's Dallas Morning News.

From all reports, seemed like a very nice guy that everyone liked.

I even sent him e-mails encouraging him and telling him I was praying for his recovery. I wish that they would put someone back
into that "beat" and start up a column about radio in the DFW market, again.

I doubt the DMN will hire a dedicated radio critic again. When Ed Bark left, they didn't even bother hiring a TV critic to replace him. It's kind of shocking the nation's 5th largest TV and radio market has no one covering at the paper. At least Ed set-up www.unclebarky.com where he gets to be unfiltered again.

The topic of newspaper's not employing a reporter to cover the radio and TV beats, has come up before. The viewpoint newspapers are taking is "nobody cares about the radio / TV beats". Before his untimely death, even the DMN had Al covering non radio topics. That is very sad, but that's where most newspapers seem to be going.

Hope you are R.I.P. Al, you have a very loyal fan base that misses you! :'(

In all honesty, Al became a shill for RMS those last few years, and Russ was more than happy to trade friendship and "inclusion" for publicity, and Al obliged. That's not to say everything was bad...Al provided us a great service with his articles and commentary, and it's places like this very board that PROVE such a demand for local radio info still exists. Wish that Robert Philpot at the Startlegram could cover local radio like he once did, but that was the Startlegram's decision.

I don't know a thing about Al and his "friendship and inclusion" with Russ (Martin, I'm guessing).

I just know it was interesting to read Al and what was going on in the local radio market.

This is one reason I turned to this forum, even though I am an outsider. I enjoy learning what is going
on in the market. Same way with this forum and the TV portion of the site, as well.

I read Ed's site from time to time, but it can get a little long-winded at times, in my opinion, but I am
glad he is there when I want to read him.

Ed, as in Ed Bark? I quit reading his stuff decades ago, because he was flaming stuff Letterman did, that I enjoyed.

I will say that Al Bumley in those last few years of his life received alot more attention due to RMS. They would have him on to dicuss the radiotopics of the day and I think they helped him out with some of the medical expenses he incurred due to the cancer in addition to the eventual funeral costs. One of the more memorable RMS shows was Al's Funeral in studio, which bordered on the line of good taste in the way it was handled.

I think we all are in agreeance that with the untimely demise of Uncle Barky and the unfortunate passing of Al, the "unpartial" coverage of the broadcast medium is a dying breed.

Al did us right in his prime. His craft will be missed.

Godspeed, sir.

Yeah I remember that, it was odd for a radio broadcast but they seemed to be respectful.
