I miss MIX 102.7

Hey Brooklyndon!

I was a regular listener/caller of Mix 1027FM. For the last couple of months in 2006, I followed the rumors on the internet concerning a format flip. At least we were better prepared than the poor souls who lost 101.1.

I think the thing that bothers me the most is how radio stations encourage listener loyalty, only to drop both fans and on air personalities like hot rocks, because the share isn't big enough. Of course, I realize that radio is big business, and I'm becoming familiar with the necessity of earning a quick big payoff due to leveraged buying. BUT. I miss that station. I miss the DJs. I've read so many posts stating "how lousy" the Mix was, but 1027 had a special sound. It had class. It had a really good on air staff. It had fun contests and great, exciting events. It was VERY interactive and accessible. It's all well and good to be able to discuss a station with the sobriety of a judge, but that belongs to the domain of those who never got involved with the station.

I've found a port in the storm with KTU. It isn't home, but I'm getting some of my "disco needs" ( ;D ) met there.

As far as "Stale 1027" goes, I absolutely can't listen to it. Besides the music, and no more Yvonne Velazquez, Joe Causi, et al, I got pushed right to the edge by those incessant, obnoxious liners: "No more talky DJs...No more talky DJs...No more talky DJs...No more talky DJs...." GIVE ME THOSE TALKY DJs ALREADY!!!!!!

At any rate, brother, I feel your pain. :'(

So nicely stated! Mix 102.7 was a great station. Some legendary DJs, such as Carol Ford, Paco Navarro along with the wonderful Michelle Visage, Yvonne Velazquez, Paco Lopez, Sue O'Neill. I still remember their Legends of Dance Weekend with Bobby Jay, Ray Rossie, Howard Huffman, etc... Station was great. Really stinks that we lost it. Had a unique sound to it, one that KTU will never have.

Mix was quite a good station, but unfortunately I feel it was doomed from the outset, scavenging for a portion of KTU's audience. That said, I felt Mix in the end was a better station than KTU, especially with KTU's almost complete turn towards older rhytmic cuts. I can barely listen to KTU anymore.

I missed "Mix 102.7" when it was the former WNEW, which is now in West Palm Beach, Florida where they now using the current WNEW calls as B-106.3. My mom used to listen to it all the time in the car during the last Christmas holiday when Randy Davis was still there. Randy Davis has been a terrific jock back when he was at WCBS-FM as a oldies station before "Jack" came along.

If you want to hear more classic dance music like the way "Mix 102.7" does when it was "New York's Classic Dance Mix", just tune in to WKTU or if you're in the Hudson Valley, WRNQ in Poughkeepsie and WCTW in Catskill are playing 6 hours of classic dance music every Saturday night from 7:00 PM until 1:00 AM on both 92.1 and 98.5 Lite-FM with Rick Knight and Claire Channel. Rick Knight is still a great jock when he is at WBPM's "Cool 92.9" playing some great oldies that aren't being heard in New York City anymore, because CBS-FM flipped to "Jack" back in June 2005. WABC still got their "Saturday Night Oldies" show with Mark Simone going, great job! They played the same music when it is still being played on WBPM in Saugerties, NY.

Listen to "Studio 92" and "Studio 98" on these Lite-FM's. I found this link from the WRNQ website if you want to listen to it on Saturday nights playing classic dance music like the way "Mix 102.7" does before "Fresh", let's take a listen.

I was privileged to speak on the phone with most of these people, including Brandi (an up and coming talent, if ever there was one), on a regular/semi-regular basis. On different occasions, I met Yvonne Velazquez, Paco Lopez, Joe Causi, Efrem Sifuentes, and Brenda K. Starr in person, and we had conversations. I mean that it wasn’t a quick, “Hi, how ya doin’," with a quick autograph. In fact, I didn’t get an autograph from most of them, because they were more like friends than performers. In addition, I saw Paco Navarro and Carol Ford live on stage at the first Night of Classic Dance, in June 2005. Most of these very talented DJs knew who I was by name (my "Mix radio handle": Kathy Cleaning My House in Yonkers), and sometimes by voice (for heaven's sake!). Of the DJ Mixmasters, I saw live performances by George Calle, and Glen Friscia. Please believe me, I’m no “radio groupie” LOL! - it’s just that I really got into the station, and the DJs and the listeners had such a wonderful rapport, and we all had so much fun together. It was like a family. :)

I remember it, too, as well as all the fun themed weekends 1027 featured. I agree with you 1027% about that unique, classy sound. As I said before, KTU is a port in the storm – at least it sounds like they stopped speeding up the music, and Jenny Costa and a couple of other mixmasters are sounding pretty good. Jenny did some pretty hot work last Saturday night.

That we lost the Mix sure does stink, but somehow, I hope it’s just “sleeping.” After all, talk got a new life on another CBS station, Free FM, AND with the same people! Live on in hope, fellow Mix fan! :)

neo, as I’ve been lurking on these boards, I’ve read a lot of your posts. You’re very thoughtful, and you always keep me interested. :)

Yep. I agree with you. And the very sorry fact of the matter was that the station was significantly better than KTU, even in Frankie Blue’s days at 1027. Frankie had left KTU for WNEW, and he got a lot of KTU's music on the Mix’s playlist. Whatever may or may not be said about Frankie Blue, he was a very good PD. I heard the results with my own ears.

At any rate, why the Mix didn’t make more of an impact on KTU fans, especially in the Frankie Blue days – indeed, when there was a migration of good KTU DJs to the Mix – is something that truly baffles me. ???

I’m not sure what you mean here, because KTU has been playing a whole lot of Classic Dance, and songs like “Rich Girl,” and “Charlie’s Angels,” that I haven’t heard on a regular playlist since the Frankie Blue era. (I’m not counting the Mix’s glorious final weekend.) BTW, I do think it’s amusing that EVERYBODY (KTU, JACK, “STALE”) is playing Outkast’s “Hey Ya.”

KTU does play other music that I simply ignore. Maybe you mean those cuts?

moshewx, one thing I'd like to add: CBS is making a HUGE miatake concerning DJs in two ways, namely,

1. NY radio fans enjoy listening to DJs, and

2. NY radio fans *love* to listen to themselves AND other listeners on the radio! :)

I need my disco fix!!!!!

UNbelievable!

And how often did you bash mix on this very board while they were still,."MIX"?

::)

Mix 1027 was great for classic dance. Ever since Mix was classic dance and sounded good, i never wanted to listen to ktu anymore. I wish the people at CBS radio would do the same thing they did for former cbsfm oldies 101 listeners like myself and that is to make a Mix1027.com/HD2 a place we can still hear all those good classic dance cuts except it would be online or hd2. They can still have Earl Mann do all the liners/promos for it like Ziggy does for wcbsfm.com, use the same Mix 1027 jingles. This is something CBS radio needs to do.
