I have to admit I am really bummed that CD101.9 changed to a rock format. At work that's all I would listen to. Now I have to deal with hearing the sounds of people typing!!!

A friend told who also is into smooth jazz mentioned that she started listening online to smooth jazz station 94.7 The Wave in Los Angeles.

I figured I might as well check it out. I have been listening non-stop. I hope no one from cd101.9 is reading this because they actually sound SOOO much better. Better music type of mix.

Has anyone else checked out the wave's stream in LA?

Their website to listen is www.947thewave.com.

If you are as big of a smooth jazz fan as me, I strongly suggest you check it out!!!! www.947thewave.com

Smooth jazz lives online!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've got news for you: There's tons of online stations that have been sounding better lately, mix-wise, than CD101.9. Frankly I couldn't take the rotation anymore. They played "Breezin" as if it was a current No.1 hit.

After all, how many times do you want to hear "This Masquerade", "Street Life" and that Lou Rawls song.....(You'll never find.....)?
I think that starved format needs a rest for awhile....and maybe another station could pick it up after some time passes and give it the attantion that a jazz station deserves.

BTW, if you still want it, I've been told it's still on their HD2 channel.

Frankly, I'm surprised CD 101.9 lasted for as long as they did. While I initally enjoyed the format when they first came on the air in the late 1980's, their playlist never evolved past staples like George Benson's "Breezin", Al Jarreau's "Mornin" and "Morning Dance" by Spyro Gyra. They were really nothing more than an Easy Listening station, playing "Smooth Jazz" covers of pop hits (i.e.-Miles Davis' cover of The Police's "Walking On The Moon"). Their attempt at the "Chill" format was haphazzard at best.

There are so many wonderful Modern Jazz, Blues and R&B artists, both past and current that the station could and should have brought into their rotation, but never did. I would have loved to have heard a "Jazz Appreciation" show, like on Sunday nights, that would have showcased some of the pioneers of Modern Jazz, like Dave Brubeck, Charlie Parker and early Miles Davis. Even Jazz legends like Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Louis Armstrong.

I miss the heritage rock of new york wnew-fm, I also miss the old rocker wplj, I also miss q-104 during the hard rock days, I miss heavy metal z-1480, I miss da buzz and all the other rock outlets that were blown up by stupid corporate suits to make way for urbanic formats up and down the dial. fyi wjjz is doing horrible in the ratings I wont be surprised if gm does not pull the plug by the end of 08, but there is really nothing else for them to put on the dial here in philly...bottom line when rockers are put to rest for urbanic formats no one complains but when the shoe is on the other foot look out the riots are on the horizon just the true facts....

Many of us Angelenos are STILL bitter over that dreadful day when the Mighty MET (KMET) was killed to become....The Wave. It was 1987.

(KMET was basically like WNEW in its heydey - a pioneer rock station.)

They played some old KMET jingles, and then "The End" by the Beatles. Then a cute pre-recorded "yuppie couple" came on making nauseating jokes about driving in their Lincoln Town Cars, followed by some serious dullsville music from the local dentist office.

So I guess what goes around comes around! ;)

Now that CD101.9 is gone, I may actually have to get an XM receiver to hear jazz in the car, unless I time-shift it off my DirecTV box.

This is the first time in years I actually have an "extra" button on my car radio. I had left the CBS-FM button and at least that didn't go to waste. I highly doubt Jazz will return to the Big Apple :(

Depends on your definition of "jazz." IMO, a lot of what CD101.9 played was just a modernized version of easy listening, not really jazz at all....Green Onions, Marvin Gaye, Phil Collins....not really jazz. So it wasn't a pure jazz station.

There's traditional jazz (much different, I know) on 88.3 and 89.9 and on other non-commercial stations around the region.

It puzzles me, too, that so many here are treating smooth jazz like it were actual jazz.

Look at it this way: "Smooth Jazz" isn't a musical genre, it's a radio format. In fact (and much like Easy Listening and Beautiful Music before it), it's got virtually no lifeline outside of being radio wallpaper; and despite protestations from its fan base, it's totally squaresville.

Which, these days, is just as well caught up in FM radio itself being totally squaresville--though it isn't like supposedly AAA-inflected "rock radio" is any better on that front...

I used to listen to smooth jazz in the early 2000. I loved it then becasue of all the smooth and funky grooves and new stuff I never heard. I was buying cd's left and right. Then a couple of years ago or so it got real boring and I kept hearing the same stuff I hear on my urban stations which were good songs but not on a smooth jazz station. I love Luther and Anita but not when I expect to hear Boney James or Pieces of a Dream or Fourplay. Of all formats I never thought there would be such a meltdown. I liked listening to some of the big ones on the internet until they all started sounding the same with the same dj's and all so I gave up on it. I still buy the music though because of satellite and the internet stations.

You probably were listening to 101.9 during the short time it had the "chill" format (which, IMO, they never gave a real chance to succeed). After a few months they reverted back to the standard smooth jazz format.

I too miss the relaxing sounds of cd101.9, but took a tip from someone on this board. the wave in LA, 947thewave.com sounds good..probably better than the old cd101.9 . anyone want to bet that the 12+ share on rxp is equal to or less than the last 2 book average of CD 101.9

CD101.9 went downhill when Russ Davis left. I remember hearing WQCD in 89/90 on trips to/from NYC/Long Island and as a kid growing up in Atlanta listening to 94Q (Star 94 since 89) "Jazz Flavors", this was so Russ Davis as being the "Father" of Jazz on the radio in the ATL, CD 101.9 in it's early years was essentially the program Russ had on WQXI-FM on "Sundaes" since 1977. When the "smooth jazz" craze of the 90's became popular, the corporate programmers watered down CD 101.9 with the crap that is the format today, and basically made it a yuppie version of easy listening. Gone were tracks from Chick Correa, only a handful of David Sanborn, no older Bob James, no more Jean-Luc Ponty, Andreas Vollenweider, or more obscure modern jazz artists like Uncle Festive. Instead, the same old wash out from Al Jarreau (and I mean some top 40 track like "Mornin") followed by Michael McDonald, Alicia Keys, and than let's play Sade's "As Good As the First Time" another 12 times in an 8 hour period.

We have WJZZ 107.5, a RadioOne Station, they've been on the air since the "Jammin Oldies" format failed on that frequency since 2001. And yes, it's B O R I N G. Thank God (and Clark Atlanta University) for a REAL full time Jazz station that is probably one of the most professionally sounding college stations in the nation, and they are probably the best on the dial in Atlanta radio at that.

http://www.wclk.com/

they have a stream, and if you've never heard a REAL Jazz station, these folks are it. They've been at it for over 25 years. I have no problem sending them a check every year either. Dare I say the clear channel, cox and cumulus swirling toilet bowls could take lessons from CLK. Amazing we (listeners) will write checks to keep them on the air, and the corporate turds have to pay us to listen (enticing us with cash, prizes etc).

yeah it's sad to see 101.9 go, but just like one of my other former favorite stations in ATL (99x), they really went along time ago and were just hobbling along...

I feel your pain as we lost the Oasis after 18 years here in Dallas/Fort Worth. They moved the format to the HD-2 channel and it is sooooo much better than it was on FM. Commercial free 100% smooth jazz. No Phil Collins, Janet Jackson, Santana etc) Just real smooth jazz. I invite you to check it out and let me know what you think. Listen online here www.smoothjazz1075.com 8)

Er, for better or for worse, that slate of artists you mention constituted an earlier, post-AOR "yuppie version of easy listening". It sure ain't Ornette Coleman or Albert Ayler...
