Have you talked to all of the stations in your immediate area...WAME, WHIP, WDSL, WPIR, WNNC, WWWC, WJRI, WKGX, WRNA, WRKB, WEGO, WSAT, WSTP?

Seeking radio employment is like opening a box of chocolates...you never know what you might find.

In about a year or two you may be saying to yourself...."I need to get out of radio! Does anybody know about any greeter gigs at Wal-Mart".

"You know, mother, life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're going to get! Your life, however, is more like a box of ACTIVE GRENADES!!!"

If you don't mind putting up with corporate America, go for it. Otherwise, I would ask why?

A lot of those stations I have never heard of....now I have heard of the WHIP, WAME, and WSAT....I had a chance for an internship when I was I believe 14 at WAME....but sadly I couldn't take it b/c of other pressing matters....and WHIP, I keep in close contact...and everytime I call there are never any openings...and I have not contacted WSAT yet....but the rest of those stations listed, I have never heard of them....

Wayne...

PS...My shots are up to date..and I would never work @ Wal-Mart. One of my co-workers now was a CSM up there and she hated it...so she quit...plus I applied 3 times and never got called...

PPS...And you are correct...why wouldn't people want to get into radio...it is a great and glamourous business :) b/c you get to meet so many people...esp. if you have a synd. show or a morning gig...and remotes too...but unlike retail..you can rest and relax every now and then...and be comfortable...

Where I am now...rest is a priveledge....and it is earned b/c I work my ass off....I only make over a G a month...but still I hate retail....I know for a fact that radio is my calling...that and computers....that is why come spring of next year I begin my CPU Sciences Assoc. Degree studies...then I go in two years for a Broadcasting Assoc. Degree....that way...I have a good knowledge of both aspects...plus hell that would make me good...for a tech or a station operator...lol...but no..retail bites balls...and I dont want it to be my career....

Never have never will....and I want to make that one clear...I never want to work in retail again after I leave JR Statesville....I dont care if the pay is not great in radio or computers...but it will at least be something for me to keep occupied....

Seems like not taking in to account the "what could be" and "wouldn't it be great if..." aspects of radio, radio today and retail today look a lot alike. They all worried about labor costs at the expense of service. They all worried about today's financial numbers at the expense of longterm goodwill and growth. The pay in both is not that great (unless you're a syndicated morning show like you said, or a qualified sales professional). The biggest companies in both industries are wrecking it for both industries, even if sometimes they are looked at with too jaundiced an eye. The main difference seems to be that there are more jobs available in retail.

I'd try restaurant management, but then again, it probably doesn't matter what kind of job you have if you ain't looking at it as a career, you'll always need some greener grass "over there." Something we all go through, especially in retail and restaurants. At least it beats selling vacuums and water purifiers. ;)

All of those stations (and more) are within 50 miles of Statesville. Go to http://www.radiolocator.com and find everything you need to know as to where these stations are...and hit the streets with CD and resume in hand.

Some of these stations are real turkeys...others, like the ground at Hiddenite, are real gems. You'll never know which is which unless you get out and look.

Wayne,
One thing you'll learn in time if you stay in radio is NEVER.......NEVER.......say never.

Wayne:

You have heard a lot of discouraging words about radio - even a few from me - but if you are dertmined to give it a shot, go for it! Just remember this - your number one loyalty should be to yourself and your family!

The radio business will demand loyalty - but it is most often a one-way street. And when times get tough for the business, be prepared to hear "it's not personal - it's a business decision". The business will make the decision it feels is best for the business. You must be prepared to do the same for yourself.

Now don't get me wrong, I am not suggesting you not be loyal to your employer! Just remember that the job has to be second in line! You and your family come first and your decisions must be weighed that way. Think of youself as the business will think of itself and you will be fine.

I can't say it enough - don't let loyalty to a station prevent you from taking an opportunity that might be better for you!

Thanks guys...i plan for the best...plus my family is my unmber one priority right now anyway....and to be honest I hope to find something good...b/c I am talking to a very fine young lady of 21 yrs old...and well she is a dear, and I want to keep her with me, and even go further...so I do plan to follw all advice given...and if I have to work on things with her befroe I pursue this dream of mine....

Wayne, I've been looking for a co-host for some time. It's probably a little farther than what you're looking for. I'm the PD at WSTS-FM in Fairmont, down in Robeson County. We're a 50,000 watt Southern Gospel station, but if it's something you might be interested in, you can send an aircheck and resume down this way.

e-mail: [email protected]

Snail Mail: WSTS-FM Opening
P.O. Box 668
Fairmont, NC 28340

I don't like to see any jock worth their salt out of work, so send something down if you're interested.

Wayne:

Since I'm in Pittsburgh and don't know you personally, I assume you already have experience in the biz.

The stations that Matt had mentioned, you may not have even heard of, but don't let that impede you from approaching them for work. Even if you have to take a part-time weekend gig, you can do that while working a job you hate (trust me, I've been there) until a full-time gig opens up there or elsewhere for you. After I was passed over twice for a promotion to full-time duties, I was able to land one at another station and quit my part-time radio gig. My own experiences in almost 20 years tell me that a part-time gig is better than no gig at all.

Even if it's board-op work, you still have the credibility of being in the business. When I got blown out of my very first station in 1989, I constantly sent unsolicited resumes and airchecks to stations in my area. And I always followed it up with a phone call to the PD. Show a willingness to work and don't think that any position is beneath you. Even if there's nothing available part-time, don't be afraid to ask if they could use someone on a casual, as-needed basis. There's always an occasion that stations could find themselves in a pinch and give you a call.

I always say that those who really want to work in radio will never have a problem finding work. The quickest way for an announcer to kill their gig is to develop an ego large enough to where you alienate the people you work with. Stay grounded, be more of a help than a hindrance, and work your gig like every day's your last...because someday it damn well may be!

Good luck and God speed, friend. I wish you the very best.

Ken

Yeah...

It's just a wee bit too far for me to travel at the present time...you are a gracious person for letting me know of this job opp....but at the present time I hate to say...but I will need to turn it down...I apologize very much...but a four hour travel right now...is as said...a little out of my league...I thank you though very much...if you know of any clusters a little closer looking...please don't be afraid to let me know...

I will let them know that you recommended me as a second chance opp to what you offered...

Please don't take it hard...I do have a resume available...but no aircheck...and I could send it your way...and then go from there on possibly finding a cluster nearer to me...

Thanks very much for the opportunity,
Wayne

Wayne,

Don't take my earlier post too seriously...you know- the one about your shots- well, maybe you should! All jokes aside, I spent 30 years in radio, retired in 2000, and I miss the business. I have a great job with my present employer (and still do radio part time), but if the day ever comes that I'm looking again, I'll probably look to radio too. Just take X-Talker's advice, and put yourself and family FIRST. My wife just resigned from 2 stations she worked at for a few days short of 12 years because she grew tired of coming home upset and stressed every night (and quite frankly, I was more than tired of it, but it was her decision to make). She took a short break to regroup, get her blood pressure down, and lo and behold, a great position with a highly regarded group dropped in her lap (she had offers the very same day she resigned). She started today, and when I met her at the door this evening and saw the big grin on her face, I knew she had done the right thing. If you really have radio in your blood, go for it, but don't be afraid of a little disappointment.

Well,

I am not afraid of dissapointment...I have had plenty of it considering I have had three jobs in the past two years...I worked a board ip position for an AM station for 6 months and loved it...but was basically pink slipped b/c I wasnt able to get any hours...my next job followed a year later just after I turned 18 at Dollar General...and all jokes aside her...I think they are the low-downdest company I have ever worked for....they screwed me royally...and now less than 6 months after..I am working at JR Disocunt Outlet and don't get me wrong...I like it there...it's just I hate the type of business it is....RETAIL....I hate retail period...never wanted to work in it....but was forced to b/c my parents think other stations will just "use" me like they say WSIC did....and I want to prove them wrong...I love and crave radio....it is a part of me now...and will be until I die....

But all things aside in Matt's post listing all the stations...I have written a few down that will be a good drive away from me...like say an hour to and hour and a half at the most...although I was offered the job on here from the PD of a Gospel Format, and saddeningly I had to turn it down being that it is a four hour drive..and well right now..it would be an overload for me...

I wish I coulda took him up on the offer...but for the meanwhile..I declined it...and who knows...if he reads this post..I would be more than happy at a later date..maybe even sometime next year to assume that position if it isnt already filled...

But the main reason I declined it, is b/c of transportation matters...I just recently got my license, and well am in the process of getting a car..and that is taking time....so hopefully next year...he can have me a his co-host...I would love that opportunity...

Wayne

GHattaway - So happy for your wife! She deserves to be happy and stress-free. It's just too bad that some station owners don't know when they have an excellent employee. Their big loss and someone elses enormous gain! ;D
