So maybe you've noticed I haven't been hanging around here much...well my computer broke and I just got a new one. I've downloaded Audacity, but trying to record with it is driving me crazy! I've set the microphone levels to almost zero and everything is coming out horribly distorted. What on earth am I doing wrong?? I'd like to be able to record MP3s on this computer, but maybe I won't be able to...

Welcome back and welcome to the club! That said, there are a few things you can try. One, go to the nearest store that sells headphone adaptor(s)that fit the patch cords you are using so you can use the radio volume knob to control the input volume. Two, buy a mixer so you can control the input volume that way. Three, listen to anyone who has a better solution than me.

Thanks, Mike. Since I wrote my first message I was thinking I should go to Radio Shack tommorow and see if they have an 1/8" to 1/4" adaptor.

I was just thinking... your computer's master volume has something to do with it too... try turning that down to a very low volume.

I've also found that when I record a stream off the internet that I have to adjust the players volume as well to get the right recording level.

Oh, and if you have your computers "sounds" on, everytime you click your mouse or go to a website, those sounds will be recorded too. At least that's the way the program I use works.

I tried turning the master volume down....it's still horribly loud...I should be able to figure this out with the right adaptor cable.

I didn't read this part close enough, instead of microphone, use the blue input on your computer labeled ((.)) and set the program to use "stereo mix". Hope that will help.

Never heard of that one, Frank! I'll check it out and see how it works.

Ooh, I missed that also.

A microphone is a very low-output device, therefore a microphone input has lots of amplification.

You need to use the "Aux" or "Line" input, which is designed for higher output devices like cassette decks, CD players, VCRs, or the "recording" outputs on a stereo.
