I-Pod Study

Yesterday the trades reported a study that found country was the least favorite genre of music among i-pod users. I noticed that when allaccess reported the story they said "bad news for country".

I have a totally different take, I say it's wonderful news for country radio. This study gives fuel to my "theory on why country radio is hot" post a few threads down. If country listeners are less likely to jump on new technology, the country format will get a bigger slice of the radio pie, which appears to be happening.

I agree. I don't know about anyone else but I see I-POD's, etc. as a competeing medium. I also agree that the "I-POD Revolution" works for us in country radio because any kind of new technology is a younger demo thing most times. CHR, Rock, and Rhythmic will be hurt by I-PODs and already are.

On why country is hot, I don't know if it has so much to do with I-PODs and the general non-use by the audience. I think it has to do more with the genre shifting and bringing in a larger spectrum of listener. New acts like Big & Rich, Gretchen Wilson, Keith Urban, and Rascal Flatts (just to name a few) really bring in younger fans but we still have Alan Jackson, George Strait, etc. to keep the P1s happy.

That's why I laughed at the comment made in another post that said something along the lines of "A Country station is different than a rock station because it calls itself country." Wrong. Alot of country music has a rock edge to it but is musically and lyrically done better than 90% of pop or rock music right now.

That's why country is hot, because it's good damn music that has within the last few years, because more mainstream.... finally.

I would like your opinion on something to see if it's exactly what I'm seeing sometimes.

I find that country music fans are more willing to buy the CD or get the whole CD of music compared to other genres (espcially CHR and Urban where your current song and maybe the last one or two determine how popular you are).. I do see Rock fans get CDs but I find the pop and urban ,with the exception of a few artists IMO are more found on i-pod or a napster style site more where you can DL just that one song instead of having to buy the CD.
