Help me with this:

I was listening to a "Classic Hits" station over the weekend that I normally don't get the chance to hear. Songs that stuck out included The Beatles "A Day In The Life" Joe Walsh "Life's Been Good" Bruce Springsteen "Born to Run" and Lynard Skynard "Sweet Home Alabama" twice over the weekend.

When does "Classic Hits" become "Classic Rock?"

Classic Hits stations will typically play "Hits"..songs that charted Top 40 back in the day. Three of the four songs you mentioned charted....A Day In The Life by the Beatles did not....Classic Hits stations tend to go deep on the Beatles. These stations also tend to play "softer" stuff...Carole King, James Taylor, Carly Simon, America, Cat Stevens, Billy Joel, Elton John,etc...

Classic Rock stations tend to be somewhat harder...while still playing the classic "Hits" like the four you mentioned above, they will also go deeper on some album cuts. Looking at Led Zeppelin..both may play "Stairway To Heaven, but a Classic Rock station would play the harder Led Zeppelin stuff...If a Classic Hits station played "Black Dog" or "Whole Lotta Love", they would probably be dayparted. A Classic Rock station would probably play harder stuff by Elton John and Billy Joel..not the softer stuff a Classic Hits station would play.

I hope that helps..and it's just one person's opinion.

As dommy said, all except "A Day In The Life" were hits. My opinion is that Classic Hits can take in whatever works in a particular area. All of those songs are familiar to radio listeners from that time and I think that works well.

You must be talking about Frank. They play Led Zeppelin often, well, maybe three or four songs, but they play often. Same with Aerosmith. Isn't that a bit much for a classic hits station?

It would be a stretch to call "A Day In The Life" a classic HIT. But "Life's Been Good", "Born To Run" and "Sweet Home Alabama" were all, in their time, AOR heavyweights AND Top 40 hits as well. They are certainly worthy of airtime within the confines of both formats, don't you think?

Dommy, I think you hit the nail on the head!
