Okay...this thread is taking so many turns here that my head is spinning! ??? Let me "stabilize" this thread here.
Yes, everyone in here knows I want Pulse 87 to do well...if not for New York, than for the "big picture" to get radio corporations to consider the dance music/rhythmic format in their markets. I had stated this back in February but was also made aware of Mega Media's financial situation down the road. Which is why there was no real promotion of the station. It was word of mouth and club flyers that made Pulse known...and still to this day, people don't realize that there is a current based dance station on the air in New York.
So whenever something big had happened (such as Star and Jewelz leaving at the same time) I did panic; in the back of my mind thinking about the financial situation as the stock was dropping. My hope with the PPM numbers, as little as they were for those seeing just the "black and white", that more advertisers would do billings on the station. And to a small extent, it had happened. But with the economy the way it is now, along with other issues happening (Sirius XM) dance music has taken a tough break. No one has money to do anything like before. And NO radio station will take a chance now! Which is why as some in here see Pulse as the ship sinking, I still want them to last as long as they possibly can.
I'm not going to get into any sort of on-air personality critique. However you may feel about them (positive or negative) they are the "voice" of Pulse 87. As the station had started, I was actually PUSHING for Jewelz to get on the air; feeling that for such a dance station to happen again they need to reflect on youth and young and not bring back voices from the old 'KTU or Hot 103/97. When Andre was let go from Party 105, I was pushing for him to get on Pulse. I never really knew Showboat (only that he wouldn't sign my petition at Beatstock '07...me not realizing at the time he worked for 'KTU! LOL). Abel Sanchez, Laura Stylez, Ruby Tuesday and Vinnie T were all new to me. Regarding the Star & Buc Wild show, I had my doubts at first since their show was strongly associated with hip-hop & R&B in the past.....but it did work out somehow! I miss those Plumm parties! :.....(
Musically? The only time I had "questioned" the station was what I felt was an "overkill" of classic freestyle, feeling that 'KTU was handling that market and that Pulse 87 should mainly concentrate as a current station (perhaps going as "old" with recurrents as 5 years old). Outside of that, love him or hate him, Joel Salkowitz is a known name in the industry. Could there be room for improvement? Certainly, and that can be said for ANYTHING. Could certain tracks heard elsewhere, get added? Sure. But for what it is worth, compared to everything else out there, Pulse is doing what they can. Until they are "out of the game", they are still "in the game".
So...back to the gist of the thread. YES, there was only one personality on the air that weekend. Heck, I would have VOLUNTEERED my time if they needed "a voice" although my radio experience is "college" (and a hellish one at that...though as a "blessing in disguise", am glad that I DIDN'T get in the industry, seeing what is happening now). But, the station is still on the air and I'll support it. And when the day happens that Pulse is no longer on the air.....I'll do what I have to. But this time around maybe NOT as hard since we are seeing radio commit a slow "suicide" as an industry with the economy issues certainly making that "death" happen faster.
Can one say "Coalition Radio?"
