I saw this one coming!

WCMC-FM 99.9 Genuine Country to flip to sports next month just in time for the NHL Preseason to start! Who didnt see this coming after they signed with the Carolina Hurricanes. They didnt do anything to 'QDR's ratings. Next one to flip is WRDU but it wont be rock i think WRDU will be urban. But back to the Subject 99.9 Genuine Country to flip to sports in september.

Sports on 99.9

If I was in charge over at Curtis, and of course I'm not, I would put Sports on 101.1 FM and then simulcast the news/talk format of WSJS on 600 AM, 1230 AM WMFR, and on 1200 AM. Then they could have the Triad and Triangle locked on sports with 101.1 FM, 850 AM, and 620 AM.

If I was Capitol, and again I'm not, I would put news/talk on 99.9 FM to compete with 680 WPTF. It seems news/talk would be a natural fit for CBC since they have the TV operation and NCNN.

I don't think 850 the buzz and 620 the bull are quaking, although I don't think anybody really quakes in fear of WCMC given their signal limitations. I think they were stronger competition for 850 and 620 as a country station cause at least they had some male listeners then. Sports is expensive as well. Very curious move.

WCMC should have lined up talk programming during the week, and sports nightly
and all weekend, if they had done this, WDNC, WRBZ, and WPTF would have some
competition.
Regarding WRDU, i think they should move "The River" from 100.7 to 106.1,
and bring back "Oldies 100.7", the current format on WRDU will never overcome
WQDR.

thats what i saying have you seen 'RDU's ratings since they switched from classic rock. Very Bad. I still think RDU will flip but their not going back to rock sorry all the old 'RDU fans the rock ship is long gone.

The Capitol-owned Durham Bulls currently air on McClatchey's WDNC "620 the Bull." Wonder if they might make the move to the new 99.9? Any conflicts between the 'Canes and the Bulls (likely between April-May or April-June if there's another Stanley Cup run) could be remedied by airing one or the other on WRAL-FM which will be done with NC State sports by that time.

Capitol actually LMAed WDNC from the Herald-Sun in 1993, before they sold it to Curtis in 2000 (CMG took over the LMA from CBC ~1997). I always thought CBC should have taken WDNC all-sports then with the station's studios in the Durham Bulls Athletic Park and lots of local sports airing already. Besides WTIK 1310's carrying the satellite-delivered Sports Entertainment Network in 1993, the sports format wouldn't come to this market until 850 The Buzz did so in the late 1990s.

I still think WCMC should flip to country legends (like WIST in the Triad) and CC-R should kill The Rooster. Then bring back the old 106.1 RDU (like CBS Radio did 92.3 K-Rock and WCBS-FM 101.1 in New York) and maybe do urban on 100.7 modeled after 96.1 The Beat in Charlotte, which in turn was modeled after WGBT in G'boro before they became "94.5 El Beato."

Although I can't speak to the signal limitations of WCMC because I'm not in the market and I don't know what their sphere of influence is, I can speak to the demographics that you refer to. The Buzz, The Bull, and WCMC will all be going after the same demo (men 25-54), so they will be their P1's . The expense you refer to is a matter of executing a budget and generating revenue. Just like any radio station, sales, promotions, and programming will all work together to market the brand. I don't think this is a curious move at all. This move gives Capitol the opportunity to consolidate their sports interests instead of having them all over the map. I think it's a great move.

100.7 modeled after 96.1 the beat wouldn't sit too well with clear channel, since that rhythmic urban would be competition for WDCG....better go full urban to compete against k97.5...and since they are downgrading to LPFM power..they will be ripe for the picking.
