Re: What happens with 94.1?

what makes you so sure they will flip soon and does this mean barsky is gone yet again
92.3 was the flagship for the 'Free FM' brand nationwide. With the 'head' cut off of this syndicated format, the body can't survive. The Free FM concept has officially failed and NY isn't alone in replacing Free FM with a music format: it happened in San Francisco last week. Out there, Free FM became KFRC-FM bringing back venerable calls and a classic hits format. In the SF example, CBS radio recently purchased the frequency - so Free FM was their first format on the frequency. In NY, K-Rock pre-dated Free and was returned.
Which brings me to the elephant in the room: What happens NOW at 94.1? The Free Fm format doesn't work well here, though it has been stronger than in some places (which isn't saying much). Did CC take the rock option off the table with the flip of 104.5?
Personally, I am not so certian that the flip of 104.5 rules out the return of rock to 94.1. The format of 104.5 skews older and is more alternative-based. An active rock format would not really draw the same crowd. The question is whether a reborn 94.1 'YSP would draw enough listeners away from WMMR to be successful. It worked before...
Option B is to continue with some form of talk. This may get some traction here in Philly, but without the synergy of all of those other Free FM stations up and down the line, CBS radio loses the economies of scale need for syndication of talent. At least within their ranks. Now that the NY station is gone, i tend to think that the others will follow. And, none were successful. The closest Free FM to success was in LA, where the pre-Free KLSX was an adult talker before the Free concept ever came along. That one could go back to local talk and do fine. But I am not so sure that would be the case here.
My money goes with 94.1 becoming a rocker again - playing active rock with classics mixed in. In other words, a brushed up form of AOR. Given the heritage, the desired demos, and the Eagles contract, this is the format that would make the most sense.
