I think it's safe to say he's coming to an end

Unfortunate as it may be, with KQBZ/Seattle's cancellation of Tom Leykis today, as it switches to "The Wolf" country, it would seem we are at the beginning of the end for WW1's The Tom Leykis Show.

Many of us on the Hot Talk board have discussed the decreasing significance of the show, despite high numbers on several talkers in Portland, etc., he is typically among the only performers on so-called lifestyle talk stations. But KQBZ, a huge FM and his top affiliate of 11 years, just went away, leaving him with only LA running him live on a station of any significance. It also makes KLLI/Dallas, running him 7-10pm CT, his top out-of-town affiliate.

The question now seems to be, will WW1 even renew a contract with a show with under 30 affiliates, mostly AMs running tape-delay in medium markets. Perhaps he will be one of those local hosts with a national significance when it comes to appearing on CNBC talk shows, etc. The other issue being, with Stern leaving Leykis flagship KLSX, how long before Infinity gets designs to flip IT to music, acing the Professor out entirely.

Whether you like Tom or not, you have to admit he has a great radio career, loves the medium and the talk format, and has worked his way up, as opposed to the talentless morons we talk about here like Jerry Doyle. A shame IMHO.

EDIT: KSCF/San Diego is live, and KIFR/SF airs four hours delayed, but I'm not convinced they'll last as talk.

Maybe Stern can take him with him to Sirius. Stern has been given a few channels on XM to put on additional shows.

Word is that Leykis will now get a delayed clearance on sister rocker KISW, evenings 10 PM-2 AM. KISW is also picking up KQBZ's B.J. O'Shea for AM drive post-Howard Stern, and KQBZ's "The Men's Room" for afternoon drive, so this very nearly turns IT into a rock station with heavy talk content.

Still, it's interesting that KISW will pick up the live/local "Men's Room" (with two ex-Baltimore talkers) in afternoon drive, and not run Leykis until 10 PM. One wonders, considering Leykis' well-publicized success in Seattle, why he didn't survive live in PMD on KISW.

As far as L.A., at least for now, Leykis isn't going anywhere, and KLSX doesn't seem to be in danger of losing the talk format. "Free FM" doesn't seem to affect the station at all, aside from Carolla taking over AMD live from the building for them.

Leykis basically losing Seattle live may result in him being basically like WW1 cluster-mates Don & Mike out of WJFK/Washington...a strong local show with some patchy syndication.

Entercom Seattle cancels Two Talk Stations

Entercom-Seattle has cancelled two talk stations:

the business station 1210 KNWX (thru 11.2004) and now 100.7

Not to mention all the hosts that left KIRO such as Brian Maloney on weekends and Allan Prell weekdays.

Seems that an underperforming FM licensed outside the city could go hot talk 24/7, and also include Dr. Laura, Clark Howard, and The Young Turks as well. Maybe they'd get 1 or 2 shares.

Franken and Rhodes on 1090 will get Hot Talk 100.7 refugees

Al Franken and Randi Rhodes on Air America KPTK 1090 will certainly get some of the hot talk 100.7fm refugees 18-49M.

1090 could explode someday and tie with KOMO and KIRO in the market, a three way horse race, similar to what it was like it was in Seattle prior to consolidation, with "KIRO, KOMO, and KING" matching their respective TV channels.

Dr. Laura wouldn't appeal to the Leykis crowd. None of those shows would.

I also don't see too many people tuning to KPTK. The fans who would go to event and call in aren't sophisticated enough. The rest of the listeners are probably more libertarian than liberal.

Not that I'm defending Tom's current act (I wish he'd go back to lib talk), but Howard Stern is also in his 50's (soon to be 52).

That's why some of us are better suited for radio than television.

Leykis has talent as a lib talker. As I've said, I wish he'd go back to his earlier act.
