I told you so...

Radio just doesn't matter that much...more proof....

The country group Rascal Flats has sold out 3 times at Madison Square Garden. And they did it with no Country Radio Presence in da big apple! There ya go...radio is passe.

So the clueless at CBS have got a new slogan for there new CHR. "AMP". Let's see...Blink, Free Fm, Fresh, Jammin, Mega, Etc...

My friends it takes more than a catchy "Slogan". Have all the slick website presence, the facebooks, my space, etc but with no engaging personalities you LOSE.

18mos: Kiss 4.1 Amp: 1.9 (Los Angeles)

So what? There are ton of alternative rock bands that sell out large clubs/theatres and arenas all over NYC. And, surprise! there is no alternative station here.

Thank You. You made my point!

Wow, Rascal Flatts sold out MSG...a 20,000 seat facility in a metro area of over 18 million plus. Who cares? Do you know how many ethnic concerts (and not just Spanish) have also had huge draws at MSG and other area venues? Does that automatically mean that we should have a full-power Brazilian or Greek or Polish station broadcasting from the top of the Empire State Building?

60,000 people over three nights is barely a blip on the radar screen in the NYC market. And let's not forget that a good portion of those 60,000 may not even be from NYC at all. People do travel to see concerts, you know.

But I do give you credit for finding a somewhat creative way to start yet another "NYC needs a country station" thread. I've lost count of how many there have been just this year alone.

Yes and MTV and VH1 don't play their videos.

MTV and VH1 don't play any videos outside of the graveyard shift, but that's neither here nor there...

Oh you're right. I didn't know that TRL has been cancelled.

This isn't a valid point. The large majority of people attending country music concerts at MSG come from outside the 5 boroughs. Infact Country 92.5 in Hartford, CT regularly advertises for country music concerts at MSG. People travel far and wide to hear country in the big city.

Re the issue of such threads, read http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/200901/end-of-whitenessthis[/url] article--particularly this section...

Note to board editor: thanks for editing my quote down to reasonable size, but please, be careful in editing the link, which happens to be
http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/200901/end-of-whiteness

And again, I recommend that article to all of you who love to spam these boards with why-New-York-needs-a-country station, etc.

Yes and MTV and VH1 don't play their videos. But wait, "What hurts the most" reached no.1 on the Billboard AC chart, "My wish" reached #13. You're out of line.

Barry Manilow/Neil Diamond/Barbara Striesand all sell out large venues in minutes. Don't hear them on the radio anymore. Always wondered why most AC stations don't play an occasional Barry. Neil or barbara. I don't know even why i come to THIS board with questions like this. Most of you are into the Rock or Dance stations. :'(

In a funny way, maybe they're better off without 60s/70s/80s-style AC radio? That is, it actually demeans them, no matter how much of a staple they were back in the day. Nowadays, liberated from the MOR/AC realm, they're artists qua artists, rather than inane wallpaper--sure, radio "made them possible", but it's no longer necessary. And, in fact, good riddance.

Perhaps that's what it all boils down to: not the artists in question, but radio specifically--those dependable old format formulae have aged very poorly, more than their tasteless-polyester-radio-dewd proponents realize.

I miss hearing Barry Manilow on the radio between January-October. Sunny 104.5 was the only station that played his music that didn't have the title "Copacabana."

Here's a link to New York's WLTW-FM-106.7 HD2 "Lite FM Classic Lite" Online stream where you should hear the artists you all have just mentioned & more:

http://1067litefm.com/cc-common/hdradio/player.php?staid=WLTW-FM (unfortunately a crummy 32 kbps - what can you do?)

This would be outside of the usual places you would hear these artists now, such as Classic Hits/Oldies; "Contemporary" Adult Standards-I just made that up ;); maybe I could become a programmer/consultant someday ;D.

What's the discussion? Obviously Manilow and Striesand can sell out thanks to name recognition. Rascal Flatts probably sold out MSG thanks to airplay on AC stations in NYC.

If the arguement against Country, or Dance, or Smooth Jazz is that the ad revenue is not good then how can we believe it is any better with K-Rock or WRXP? In this economy I doubt anybody is generating much ad revenue, so why not take the risk on a format that has not been around in a while? Even the tried and true that everyone believes is the only way to go in radio are having a tough time. If the times were good we would not have all the layoffs. That said I would think Country, or Dance, even Smooth Jazz could be programmed in a cheaper fashion than say CHR. With ever tightening payroll a good juke box station might make sense.... "92.3 Jack Country" anybody? Give it a low key local morning show and be automated the rest of the day.

Country has had a tough time as it is in the NYC area. A half-assed, Jack-like attempt at country would be a sure-fire failure.

Listen to the guy Howard Stern would listen to before he made it,Garry Meier Feb.24th A.M.560 WIND Chicago,5-9am on the Big John and Cisco show. This is almost as exciting as the new's about the model,Dani Sperle who broke the world's record for wearing the smallest G-string at Carnival in Rio.
