I-Track: WTKK "thisclose" to Barnicle deal (no surprise?)

Herald Inside Track today

"We hear that WTKK and Mike Barnicle are thisclose to inking a deal for the sometime-Herald columnist to permanently take over Don Imus’ morning-drive slot. Discussions are continuing, said Mike. 'We have to perfect an imperfect product,' he said. He suspects the new time slot would run 5:30 a.m. to 9 a.m."

(so, an hour more of Graham I'd guess. Prob. no surprise tho I thought I read that Mike wasn't too fond of
doing shows longer than an hour...?)

Maloney on SaveWRKO.com (maybe time to change name of blog? deals with more than just 'RKO):
"At the moment, for example, righty Michael Graham spends two hours in the middle of a lefty sandwich...That doesn't mean WTKK must be conservative all day long, but that happens to be the main opposition to the Bay State's unprecedented one-party rule. In addition, it's where Boston talk radio has succeeded in the past. For one thing, liberal counterprogramming is probably smart up against WRKO's Rush Limbaugh, but Barnicle's morning libtalk snooze is a major, major mistake.

This station dont need this Racist, Boston Globe Drop Out .

This would be an excellent time to send the Graham cracker back to South Carolina and insert "STEPHANIE MILLER"! I'm sending an e-mail to her syndicator right now.

Graham was hired when they thought they were gonna lose Severin, IIRC, and he's part of their
political lineup when they do post-debates, etc. But yeah, as much as we shouldn't embrace
syndie over local, EITHER syndie Miller would be fine (Steph or Dennis). Or maybe pair Graham
with Barnicle in the morning. I don't really listen to either show (Barnicle or Graham) so I can
_miss them both_ at the same time :)

The only TWO racists at WTKK are Michael "Crackers" Graham and Jay Severin who you may remember in February when Governor Deval Patrick first appeared on his monthly hour visit to Egan and Braude for a segment called "Ask The Governor" turned it into "AXE the Governor".
Not only is Jay one of the ugliest looking person I have ever seen - he has a perfect face for radio - he looks like a deformed character from some Dicken's novel - but he is a racial and ethnic bigot.
Mike Barnicle is not a bigot.

Plagiarist, bore, creator of fictional stories masquerading as truth, but not a bigot, I guess. Didn't he
once claim that Dershowitz said something he really didn't say? ("I love Asian women, they're so
submissive")? Also may have said something incorrect about Howie which led to the Imus lawsuit...

>>Globe editor Matthew Storin told the staff that he had asked for and received Barnicle's resignation, because of questions about whether the writer had fabricated characters in a 1995 column. Also, in an issue that will hit newsstands Friday, The Boston Phoenix weekly newspaper will report that Barnicle lifted portions of a 1986 column from a 1961 book by journalist A.J. Liebling. (CNN)

>>Attorney Alan Dershowitz had accused Barnicle of falsely attributing a racist quote to him. Neither Barnicle nor the Globe retracted the column, but in a confidential legal settlement reached after his complaint, the Globe agreed to pay Dershowitz $75,000, according to a lawyer who has been briefed on the matter."
(BOSTON ONLINE)

just type in "Barnicle plagiarism" to yahoo and see what else you can find.
Tom Mashberg: " In 1973, just after he'd begun his thrice-weekly column, Barnicle quoted a Boston gas station owner as making a racial slur at the height of the city's busing crisis. The man sued. In 1982, he was awarded $40,000 after a judge ruled that Barnicle had "interlineated" his notes. In English, that means the judge suspected the racist bits were penciled onto the pad after the fact."

The Globe's Hiawatha Bray reacting to the firing of Mike Barnicle:

"The word raced around the newsroom like wildfire. First we heard about the Phoenix article with more bad news for Barnicle. Then in the afternoon, the curtain finally came down. Matt Storin called an impromptu meeting over at the city desk. I left my unfinished technology column and rushed over to listen. People were running across the newsroom to hear the news--you'd have thought Clinton had come in to announce he was quitting...Storin said that the whole thing had been extremely painful and embarassing, but "at least we're all now on the same ethical page.'' The assembled newsies roared with laughter and cheered Storin...Indeed, the mood in the newsroom was one of relief and even a certain satisfaction. We are now free from the shadow of Barnicle once and for all. It'll take time to repair the damage, but the repairs will be made.
Let the REAL journalism begin!"

(VB mentioned what it was like at WRKO when the word came...a giddy Howie Carr kept smiling and
saying 'Barnicle resigns! Barnicle resigns!' and laughing...)

http://media.www.dukechronicle.com/...A.Lazy.Plagiarists.Charmed.Life-1447135.shtml

"The writing career of Boston Globe columnist Mike Barnicle died earlier this month. Good riddance. Known for insightful and touching columns about the impoverished and disenfranchised, Barnicle lost his edge as he gained success. Despite unoriginal columns, a tendency to fabricate quotes and multiple accusations of plagiarism, The Globe kept publishing the popular and influential columnist three times a week. Even after its initial dismissal of Barnicle, The Globe rehired him under pressure from his influential friends, indicating that the paper's desire to produce entertainment compromised its commitment to good writing."

Best Fiction: The Boston Globe.

Howie Carr's dim star is imploding and Mike Barnicle's is in the ascendency.

Yes, there is a God ! :)

Let me know when you hear that the Herald has fired Carr for plagiarism or fabrication, or let me know
when Barnicle's book hits the best seller lists. ::)
I don't know the ratings for Barnicle & His Toadies in the Morning vs. Howie's show but I would think
Howie's are better. Also Howie has 11 more affiliates than Barnicle does.

Could you back up the "racist" comment please?

How many segments has Howie Carr done on the Today Show and NBC as well as MSNBC. Yeah, Fox News asks Howie to do a :30 live shot maybe two times a year. Barnicle is crying all the way to the bank...and you can bank on that.
Carr made his career trying to destroy anyone who he thought might be a threat to his limited talent and now he is boxed in by his own hubris.
You may not like Barnicle but he has made more friends than enemies which is more than you can say for Carr. Barnicle had friends when he needed them. Who would come to Carr's aid if he needed them?
Don't wish Carr ill but again he has limited his own rise in the media.

This may be entirely off the point, as I know nothing about Barnicle's career as a columnist or on NBC, but isn't it true that his morning show absolutely sucks? Lousy ratings, lousy show, lousy host.

Is there anyone who thinks Mike Barnicle is actually good at what he does on the radio? It's beyond bad. It's embarrassing.

Isn't that the point of this entire board--what happens on the radio?

I'm not sure if Barnicle can be called a racist but he had claimed a gas station owner had said the
N word, and later accused Dershowitz of saying nasty things about "Asian women".
Howie, however, is a _non_fiction columnist...

Howie's star performance: On C-SPAN behind Bulger during the testimony about corruption in
the FBI (John "Zip" Connolly, and whether Billy knew where his brother was). Oh, the pain. the pain!

>>his morning show absolutely sucks?
Must-listen radio for hacks (the ones who don't listen to Finneran), I guess. Boring...

Howie has made lots of friends, in the media and elsewhere, actually.

To paraphrase's Arthur Miller's great "Death of A Salesman" as Willy Loman said of a fellow salesman, "He was liked, but not well liked." The same might be said of Howie Carr and that is being generous.

Meanwhile Barnicle's show is deathly boring. There should caution listeners that it may cause them to fall asleep at the wheel.
