Amen to that!

DFW radio was one of the best radio markets not too long ago at all.
Whats the Hispanic population of the DFW area?

Again, how do you teach students who speak only Spanish with teachers who speak only English?

Sign language?

Spanish speaking teachers teaching english is the solution of course, plus opening some adult education course for the parents as well. Teaching english begining in kindergarten lasting through 6th grade is sufficent time to master it.
In Arizona they have english only in the schools. Why? Budget. They reasoned if they have bilingual teaching, not only would they have to have spanish, but an increasing asian population split among Thai,Korean and Vietnamese. They simply can't afford the large diversity of language teaching in the public schools. This came from a recent conference of educators at Grand Canyon University.

Well, the kids are learning English -- the younger, of course, the better.

But how would you propose to teach students who speak only Spanish with teachers who speak only English?

And a language courses used to be required for high school and college graduation.

Besides, this requirement applies only to principals not to teachers as I understand it.

One of the real problems in education nationally is President Bush's "No Child Left Behind Program".

Forget the problems and the fact that wealthy school districts are ignoring it by rejecting federal funds.

Even the worthwhile sections of the legislation are badly underfunded.

But what does any of that have to do with Sunny?

Be patient, a female-oriented, soft oldies format will reappear again someday --probably to fail again as well.

Language instruction can and should begin earlier.

Because of the brain's ability to learn languages, each year that passes, it becomes harder for a child to learn a new language. Listen to different generations of Hispanics and the difference is evident and striking.

Again that is one of the problems of Bush's "No Child Left Behind" -- lots of promises plus lack of funding equals ... empty promises and no solutions.

Very true. Extremely few truly bilingual persons learned a second language in adolescence, and not many learned it after about age 6 or 7. It is progressively harder for humans to learn languages as they age... most adults can not do it beyond a limited set of phrases. The bilingual can think in either language... in fact, a real bilingual will dream in either language.

Yeah. Look at Kasa and Kalle... stations with significant amounts of Spanglish on the air... the more Spanglish of the two, Kalle, beat Kasa in the month of July, in fact, probably due to its more bilingual presentation.

ESL....was Learning Spanish

It's called "English as a Second Language" something Mrs. 317C50KW
has been doing for 3rd and 5th graders for the last 4 years. Teacher certification for ESL is rigirous, and 3 and 5th graders are required to take the TAKS tests.

Her class resembles the United Nations...Asian, African, Russian and a sprinkling of hispanics. The key is total immersion english....reading, composition, spelling, speaking out loud etc. Most of the kids she sees are eager and attentive learners.

Yes, no child left behind is an unfunded federal mandate(and please thank Teddy Kennedy for that as well).

The Texas legislator has no reason to pass anything reforming school funding in the state because it will upset their re-electability.

And be thankful that there are still a few teachers out there willing to put up with the BS they face everyday. Mrs. 317C50KW has been doing it for 35 years.

Re: From the great philosopher...

... Rodney King, "Can't we all just get along."

Are all the personal attacks necessary? I'm here to discuss radio and its problems and strengths. Let's save the personal attacks for the playground at recess. It sucks to want to read posts about a particular station, and you open it up and it just a bunch of garbage that has nothing to do with radio.

We shouldn't have personal issues with anyone here. Lively debates on topic are always fun, and some subtle humor. Save the attacks for the people who are destroying radio. If you do know someone personally here, and want to have a pissing match with them, exchange e-mail addresses with them and do it off the boards and let's talk about what is happening over the airwaves. That's why most of us are here.

Nobody died and made me Pope. I just get sick of reading 20-30 posts that have nothing to do with the topic posted.

And I like most of Ed Murrow's posts, they are on topic and they are HIS opinion.

Sorry if I offended anyone, but I had to get that off my chest. <P ID="signature">______________

Re: Hispanic population and things I want back...

The Hispanic Population of the greater DFW market is just under 20%. I am using an estimate, because the actual figure is from copyrighted material, which is a no-no here. So, that should explain the uprising of these Spanish stations, and their success in the Metroplex. I did not realize that it was higher than the African-American population, which is about 14%.

And, if we're asking for stations back I want...

100.3 JAMZ
98 KZEW "The Zoo"
KVIL (the way it used to be)
Q102 (I'd love to hear a triple-shot weekend right about now)
94.5 The Edge (the way it was in the early 90's).

The population estimate used by Arbitron comes from the US Census annual projections, and is not copyright.

[Edit]

Thank you Mrs. 317C50KW for your dedication. Thanks to our elected officials, teaching has almost turned into a thankless profession much like radio. Before Mark White was governor, a starting teacher made considerably less than a DJ. Now the situation has reversed. And still, for what a teacher has to do, the starting pay is inadequate.

What's the definition of insane? Hint: It's not Crazy Eddie.
