I was flipping through my radio and....

I came across La Kalle 99.1 and actually noticed a hip hop song that I liked (never knew 99.1 played english hip-hop)..At the end of the song a female voice pops up and names the artist and title. I continued to listen and that happened at the end of every song on that station..Two radio stations in Albuquerque, KKOB-FM and KKSS-FM also have that..KKOB-FM calls it the "pop tag" where a voice names artist and title of every song..I always thought that was a great idea..Other markets have also begun doing this..mostly on CHR-pop stations and a few Hot-AC. Would be great if stations such as JACK or KISS did that, then you wouldn't have that annoying person calling to say "who sings that." Anyone know if song ID's are in the works for any other stations in DFW and if it would work out here?

Listeners are going to call in and ask for song info, even if you announce it before / after you play it. Not all of them are going to catch the info.

Happens all the time...

KPTY "Party 104.9", here in Houston does that too. I like it. Someone should have done that a LONG time ago.

Sure a lot of people will miss the title and artist and call but it's still a good idea. It shouldn't be done for the convenience of station personnel, it should be done because the listener wants to know and we DO want to know.

I always did regard the "rule" that one shouldn't back-announce songs to maintain "forward momentum" as one of those annoying bits of conventional wisdom that everyone just accepts. I can think of at least one station that has been doing it for years and has good ratings.

There's also the rule of "Don't help the listener whn s/he doesn't need it". ::)

And don't forget www.yes.com :) Sure they miss a few, and get a few wrong. But it's still a cool method most of the time. 8)

The Twister does this with most of their songs if the DJ doesnt name the song they give a tag at the end to name the song, artist and album.

Might need to be done on chr type stations, but it would sound sorely out of place on many formats...

I mean, do KLUV listeners need a pop tag to tell them that was The Supremes with Ain't no mountain high enough? Do classic rock listeners need to be told that was Stairway to Heaven? I mean, c'mon, the average listener has only been hearing that song for going on 40 years...

Speaking from personal experience, I can tell you some people are good at remembering song titles / artists, more than others. This is true even with oldies music. You'd think everyone can remember this info on a very popular track, yet they call or e-mail anyway.

As automation is ubiquitous, couldn't such a pop-up tag run ahead a song, to maintain forward momentum?

On the other hand, I sometimes don't know a song has pegged my "cool" meter until well into a song, where I might not have been riveted on every word spoken before said cool song aired. I can see reasons why stations should vary between pre/post announces for
best listener attention.

Teach the listener that you WILL tell them, if they're paying attention at least half the time.
