To me, that's a killer list! As someone who went to high school in the '90s, but has an affinity for classic rock as well, there's hardly anything on there that would make me change the station.

Personal favorites would be The Wallflowers, Rolling Stones, Stone Temple Pilots, Plant & Krauss, Gin Blossoms, Dishwalla, Elton John, and Lenny Kravitz. The rest is at least "pretty good" if not better.

I would change the station in a heartbeat.

@ jeffdfw and others who've experienced the disappearing post problem, it's being discussed on the "Ask Radio-Info" board: http://boards.radio-info.com/smf/index.php?topic=183982.msg1615025#msg1615025
I found that clearing my browser cache helped, YMMV.

About KXT...personally, even if I understand why they became more mainstream, it seems like they went a little too far in that direction. Let's hope that there's a little more fine tuning of the format, since IMHO a lot of tunes just don't belong, especially worn out classic rock.

Yep, at post time, the original thread (link here) was on the board ten minutes ago; a few minutes later, like magic, it's gone. And if you click on the link, you are greeted with an "An error has occurred!" message. Plus, the thread was linked on TRI today, so hopefully folks will know to go to the main board and find this thread, too...

As far as your thoughts on KXT's playlist, JD, we already have a radio station in New York that mixes in "worn out classic rock" amongst its alternative songs. And it's not even a public radio station, it's WRXP. ::)

+1
I would like KXT to bring us something different, not old alternative or worn out classic rock that I can hear on other stations or from my old CD collection. I think they were a bit too "underground" at launch and most of 2010, but now they have gone way too mainstream. Give us deep cuts of some of the artists above, not the well known songs. Throw in some local music, Texas music, more indie\college rock please, and maybe a tiny bit of the above to keep the commercial music heads happy. Of course that's just my take :)

I like it for the most part. The station was so obscure that it was unlistenable in the beginning. Hence the .0002 ratings.

There is still no reason to play Matchbox Twenty or Train, though.

I see nothing wrong with it. It's off-the-wall eclectic with some classic thrown in, which I love (but, perhaps I'm in the minority). The only thing I would tweak is putting the music into sets. For example, from the list posted above, I would have put Blondie, Devo and Depeche Mode back-to-back.

Ah, <sigh> I remember back in the day when AOR Radio played music in sets...

Some years ago, I was doing PM drive at a 'Triple A' station when I got a call from a listener who said, paraphrasing...."..hey why don't you guys play some INXS from back when they were good", meaning, of course, the time BEFORE they had hits. Why is it that some people think because a song is obscure it's automatically better, somehow. It's the same with 'KXT, I guess. Looking at that list posted above, I'd hardly call that mainstream, yet there are quite a few songs in there that more than 5 people would know. Not necessarily a bad thing. After all, they're not playing Justin Beiber. Keep in mind, it's BROAD-casting. That having been said, you can still be quirky, diverse and musically interesting without being too hip for the room. Apparently the powers at 'KXT have discovered that as well. Good for them.

Another take on the topic: The term BROADCASTING as applied to radio back when the nation had a thousand stations. Even when we topped 2,000 stations it still made sense.

What the heck have we got today.... 10,000 stations? plus Internet streaming?

Can anyone make it today by BROADCASTING? Isn't everybody faced with specializing... to some extent.

Good comments there. The reaction to the KXT retooling reminds of the hue and cry over changes at KGSR Austin. The heritage AAA went a lot more mainstream a while back and it seems to have been the right thing. Granted Austin is a more vibrant market from a home-grown musical standpoint as compared to D/FW, so they have some advantages over KXT in their ability to include local music.

See what you think about this playlist from KGSR: http://www.kgsr.com/BroadcastHistory.aspx

Good point. However, there is such a thing as being 'too nichy', if that's a term. I realize that, to some folks, there is no such thing and that's just not realistic. I guess the line is fluid. You hit the air, see how it goes, then you adjust. 'KXT has adjusted. Also, the fact that there are so many stations out there just means you have to go and get some of your audience from someone else, most likely other radio stations.
