There are other topics that I will post on regarding my beach trip, but anything that doesn't fit in any of them has to go here.
This first part isn't relevant to this board but there's no point in starting a topic where it is. Besides, it doesn't fit anywhere.
After another trip that took me within range of this station, I still had one of my car radio buttons set on Life 103.1 in Sanford. Now I don't like all of its music--and the second song I heard was "What a Feeling" by Irene Cara--but I could at least pick it up well enough to listen and like what good music there was.
Farther down the road there is a low-power station that plays beautiful music at that time of day. I liked some of it, but not all. It's a nice alternative to the other stuff out there.
Once I lose that signal there is WIOZ with Jeff Rollins.
My car radio isn't very good so WIOZ didn't get me as far as South Carolina.
It has been reported here that the Florence area was getting a station that would simulcast WRBK, an oldies station in the Charlotte area. It is on the air, and some of the music was actually good. But it didn't last until I started picking up Easy 105.9 rather than the hip-hop garbage known as Swagga 94.1/105.9. In the old days I could pick up Easy 105.9 in North Carolina and all the way from there. Last year that ended when a gospel station blocked it out.
But WLGI Radio Baha'i had smooth jazz and was quite clear.
By Marion I tried Easy 105.9 and it was finally listenable. Still, it was time for Rush so I didn't spend a lot of time listening to good music. Rush is quite entertaining.
Besides, unlike last year, when Easy finally seemed to have gotten the message that Sinatra, Nat King Cole and the others who made the songs popular in the first place were as important as Rod Stewart and Michael Buble. This year, the station seemed to be back to its attitude of two years ago. Not once did I hear the original artist for a song that would be a standard rather than oldies or AC. Furthermore, I heard some garbage that might have been Sade.
And when I was tired and ready to go home, once again this year the cable channel with the real estate ads did something else when I was ready to watch, and they probably wouldn't have had the good music with those ads. I tried what I discovered last year--something called "Diane at Six"--where someone named Diane would rather run her mouth than play good music. "Let's talk about dogs." Let's NOT talk about dogs. I can't stand dogs.
I couldn't even see if WLGI did jazz that time of day. My radio (the one I brought and kept in my room) couldn't pick up FM stations below 94.5, and one time either Movin' 94.5 was off the air or my radio couldn't pick that one up either. Two exceptions: the radio did get a fuzzy signal which was not The Bone in Wilmington (I forgot that has moved to 103.7) but Wave 104.1. And Star 92.1. With John Tesh. Is there anything more annoying? I'm not sure which is worse--Mr. Tesh or the so-called music. And I got supper one night at Dairy Queen where Star was blasting. Even the nice quiet breakfast restaurant had Star, but at least it wasn't turned up loud. Based on the so-called music, I'm guessing the Gay Dolphin had Kiss as well, but they have played Bob in recent years. Regardless, most of what I heard was ridiculous laughing by one of the many morning shows with ridiculous laughing.
I'm amazed at how clear ESPN Radio was. I forgot they moved. WJXY, whatever it is now, couldn't be heard on my radio. I remember 100.3 FM not being very clear. I'm staying in a new motel now and this year I was on the fifth floor, but there are lots of high rises. The place I stayed last year was too close to the ocean (and had the "NO" sign lit this year, believe it or not) and I don't want to hear the ocean at night, and this place was cheaper. The place I stayed for 30 years has only Friday and Saturday office hours. But it was too expensive anyway.
All the translators seemed so clear.
I'm curious as to why Kiss sounds like it's coming out of a different set of speakers when I'm in my car. It sounds so very different.
One last comment on Easy--why so few songs in a row before there has to be talking? And there's so much talking. It does give me a chance to smaple what the other stations are doing, but I'd like to just sit back and listen to music like I once could do. Even when the morning show was over ... "Let me tell you what's going on in the Collins household." Who CARES? I'm about to lose your signal!
I couldn't quite make out what the DJ said the good song was on WLGI. Is Pieces of a Dream a song or an artist?
