I wish I could believe you, KEZ

You're trying to tell us you're starting Holiday Music early to bring the spirit of the season to the Valley.

You're trying to tell us that your listeners love the Holiday Music so much that they just can't wait for it to start.

You're trying to tell us that it's your gift to Phoenix.

Why don't you guys just come clean?

You started Holiday Music early because it always seems to spike your ratings, and gee, the December numbers are what sales people base their traditionally slow January bookings on.

You started Holiday Music early because there are only so many times a day you can play Shania Twain's "I Feel Like A Woman".

You started Holiday Music early because those same ratings are starting to show that Beth and Bill have lost their fastball.

Hey, we don't blame you. Just tell the truth for a change. You're desperate, and you need a boost.

Then again, how many people really wanted Holiday Music ONE WEEK BEFORE THANKSGIVING?

Well, maybe your sales people did. After all, they listen to the station more than the public does.

Well said TAWT. Great post.

Maybe KEZ should play holiday music year round? The huge increase in ratings would mean everyone could have the spirit of the season in their hearts every day! No more road rage. They could win the Nobel Peace Prize.

Ah cut 'em a little slack Mr C. KEZ was afraid one of the 2,000 Spanish language stations in Phoenix was going all Musica Navidad and they had to pre-empt the position. As Nurse Jeff sez...There's dough, dough, dough in Ho-Ho-Ho ratings. Buena suerte, indeed!

They are starting it now because the last phase of the Fall book began yesterday. No issue, nothing to see.

Spanish language stations generally play little to no Christmas music. Some music forms in Spanish have no Christmas music at all.

You lost me, David.

No issue, nothing to see. I'm not sure where you're going. Please explain.

Last phase of the Fall Book seems to suggest my theory of doing it for ratings holds up. I don't think it's going to work, though. Sad as it sounds, people do get burned out on holiday music 24/7...especially when it's on for seven weeks (let's agree on one thing -- they'll keep playing holiday music through New Year's).

Speaking of burn out, I see no one is disagreeing with my view of Beth and Bill. They're staying too long. The act is stale, and KEZ can't bring themselves to admit it. Every successful radio show in town has had to deal with it at some point. Ding! It's now your turn, KEZ.

The reasoning is very simple. They wanted the full ratings boost of Christmas music in the fianl phase of the book. the book ends the 15th of December, so they had to start yesterday or today to get the 4-week phase complete.

It is simply a ratings graber among females, proven for the last 4 or 5 years and nothing new. Not even wsorth commenting. What is interesting is that all the comments about this come from guys, who are outside the target of this cash-free promotion.

As I said, you are a guy. It is not aimed at you, or at "people." It is aimed at adult women, who love the feature and generally increase AC station shares in the last phase by 30% on average.

Again, you are using a guy's perspective to evaluate a female station. KESZ is over 70% female, and I doubt they give a whoot about what men think.

That I agree with you on, David, but I still hold to the opinion that starting a week before Thanksgiving leads to the possibility of listener burnout.

I gave the reason, not the logic. The reason is Arbitron. The logic is whether this is going to be too much by the time Christmas actually comes. But, of course, after 12/15, there are no ratings taken and we will not know. Winter does not begin until 1/5/06!

I used to think that stations went all-Christmas too early. But after seeing the great ratings I changed my mind years ago. Now I think if your'e going to do it, always do it before Thanksgiving, get the most out of it.

One thing that confuses me is you criticize KEZ for saying "We know you love this holiday music" and then say they are only doing it for the ratings. I see a correlation between giving listeners what they like and high ratings, but you seem to think they are two unrelated factors?
