I101 Tweaking Playlist Toward AC

In the last hour I heard Katy Perry "Teenage Dream," Colbie Caillat "Bubbly" and now Bruno Marz "Just The Way You Are."

I guess this means happy trails to Sir Mix-A-Lot and Wreckx-N-Effect? Having those artists on this playlist would be like oil and water. Then again, this is Merlin, the radio company that brought you "FM News."

If Katy Perry and Bruno Mars can play alongside the stuff that's on CHR now, I don't see why Sir Mix-A-Lot would be such a stretch. In fact, I think some CHR's still play "Baby Got Back". But I guess we'll see what happens with the format.

If they go towards AC, brilliant, just brilliant ::) ....Chicago isn't a Mainstream AC market.

Then how come WLIT has hung in as a mainstream AC since Chancellor bought the station in 1998 and mainstreamed it?

As I've said on here before, I wonder if CC keeps WLIT as is to have a place for Christmas music since it is so huge for them. That is the only time of the year WLIT gets really good ratings and it probably bills through the roof. They've tried over the years to improve the station, such as getting hotter sounding, etc. (only to revert back to an "older" sound), but it doesn't really help. Now they are at least trying a local morning show again. I think they got like a 2.7 share in the last PPM. Doesn't really look like a share I'd try to cut in to.

Wow...Yesterday WIQI was sprinkling newer material "here and there", but as of right now, it's tilted wayyyy more towards current product.

Pop music is hot right now and billable!

Merlin needs ads and cume! Simple biz move, stupid, but simple! Plus with E&K talking to the right they may steal some Mix music lovers.

Chicago Radio is so boring...

There are so many stations that sound the same..CHR, Hot AC, AC..it's the same old same old. I know the answer to the next question is older demos, but why aren't there more stations like Miami's WFEZ?

Chicago suffers the same problem as any other market. Too many stations slicing up a narrow demographic pie. What happened to variety?

One more point. I love the "Jack" like stations that claim "we play everything". "Everything" is defined as rock leaning songs from the 70s and 80s..or "The Greatest Hits of All Time"..all time meaning 1966 to 1985 rock leaning songs. Long Island's WHLI's slogan is "The Hits of a Lifetime",which isn't far from the truth. They play songs from the 40s through today in the context of their format which covers standards, oldies and select Soft AC.

Ratings in the right sales demos produce billings, not formats.

Merlin needs ads and cume!

Radio is not, principally, sold based on cume. It is sold based on Rating (or its equivalents, AQH Persons and Share), and the metric is Cost Per Point.

Cume, if used at all, is part of calculating reach and frequency for a campaign, not for initial station selection and pricing evaluation.

I think they mean Robyn. The blonde Swede who's now considered hipster and indie.

1. Robin S. - Show Me Love

It the American dance version. The other version got some airplay or selected hot AC stations. The first was a bigger hit stateside.

So in other words, Chicago is screwed out of an alternative rock station for more pop tards. Well, it could be worse, you all could be living in Houston.

Robyn - Show Me Love

Also, there were two songs titled "Hold On" released in the 90's - both in 1990, to be exact... I don't think i101 played either, but they did play other En Vogue selections...
