i94 goes Classic Hip Hop

I have to admit if there's one thing that 93.9 is known for, it's being the flavor of the month. How long will this one last?

And, can this market support this format on a full power station? (I'd be a little more willing to believe it would have supported the 102.9 translator)

And, what does 102.9 do now? Does it still go "BOOM"?

Of all the things ... classic hip-hop in Indy?

According to Twitter & Facebook (official i94 pages on each) the station claims it has decided to stay with "Classic Hip-Hop That Makes You Feel Good" as a permanent format.

We haven't this much excitement in this market for a while. With the TV flips on 1/1/15, and the (apparent) success of Classic Hip-Hop...

i94 also said on Facebook that they were up to 8,000 likes and trying to see how fast they could get to 10,000.

Re:

Is there a more poorly run large radio company than Cumulus?

There is seemingly zero quality control over there.

So, all on-air mentions of the "i94" brand have been scrubbed, yet that hideous logo is still plastered all over the station's lame web site. On-air, the station is simply calling itself "93 point 9."

I really love the streaming audio player, which features a disgustingly close-up shot of Taylor Swift's nostrils and overbite, as well as images of other milquetoast CHR artists. Apparently, no one has bothered to change the artist images to, you know, something consistent with what the STATION ACTUALLY PLAYS.

I like a lot of the music the station is playing, but that's mainly because I haven't heard much of it in a long time. It won't take long for burn to set in. Once that happens, the station will probably transition to a "CHUrban" format along the lines of 93.3 in Dallas. 96.3 will crush them.

Given the wide gulf that now exists between Alt 103.3 and Q95, it seems to me some type of mainstream/active rock format would have been a better move. Then again, most big city Cumulus rock stations are a disaster these days. A perfect example of this is located just down the road in Cincinnati (96Rock).

I like the sound. It exudes fun, IMO. I hope Jay Michaels can do something with the signal. At 8.4K-B1, it covers the metro well, but I've noticed signal degradation south of Franklin, past Shelbyville and towards Lebanon.

Wow. #1 in the Beat's first book. That's huge. Wonder if the quick burnout reported in other markets for classic hip-hop will happen here.

Cumulus gets it right!

It is the fact that they are doing the classic hip hop in a diversified style, the radio one stations are focusing on mainly African Americans, where as the approach in Indy by Cumulus is a well focus hit presentation that all different kinds of adults love.

Now, it is beyond foolish to think that they will maintain a 7 share, in fact i'd expect those numbers to be cut in half next book. WHO CARES!!! This station couldn't get above a 2 share before so in this situation this was a very savvy move.

I think you will have more longevity with this pop approach to classic hip hop, and I think that when the novelty runs its course you can refocus it into an adult rhythmic station. You can add some newer music, only established hits and the main draw must be the old school music, but it will make the station recover from the burn of the classics and carve out a very profitable niche of adult numbers.

I can't imagine 93.9 will sustain those numbers, but they should enjoy it while they can. I have to agree that, even at half its current ratings, it would be doing better than it has in the past. I seem to remember it's pulled in numbers around the 3.5 range a few times, but it hasn't been many.

classic hip hop

The station is already adding a few currents and recurrents, some is R&B and dance pop, seems as if they may move to a Rhythmic AC like Q 102 in San francisco, or 103.7 The Beat in Seattle. They dont seem like they play enough west coast gangsta rap, it sounds more like Hot 96 used to sound when it was a vanilla Rhythmic Urban in the 90s, before Radio One got them Blazing. I dont think they could take on Hot 96 with all hip hop, that station is heriatge hip hop in indy, and radio one does a great job with their Urban stations, WHHH and WTLC are top notch stations in indy, and listeners are loyal.

This is an adult format, it attracts listeners 25-40 years old. For sure it is top 5 18-49 and 25-54, probably #1 in those demos. The ppm that is free to the public is 6+ but if you know the format and the demos it attracts you can conclude how well it has done in those target demos, esp if it has a 7 share.
