IBA Career Fair This Weekend In Indy

Hey Everyone...
I'm wondering your thoughts on the IBA's Broadcasting Career Fair this weekend in Indy.
I'd love to be fulltime on air or Promotions again, but am wondering if they're looking for more Sales than Programming at these events?

Anyone been to one that can clue me in before I decide to hit the road for a 3 hour ride?

Thanks!

These things generally have more to do with making the government happy than hiring people. And yes, radio always needs good sales people. Every business needs good sales people. On-air & programming, not so much.

I would go! Especially if you want to get a job at a small market station. There will be a lot of GM's there.

Thanks for your advice everyone.

It appears it's geared more for college kids than those who are just looking for work though with the PSA.
So I'm wondering if it's still ok for me to attend or should I just seek jobs through All Access and other sources?
I'd like the face to face interaction, but don't want to be in an awkward situation if you know what I mean.
I've got a ton of experience from on air, production, promotions, and some programming, but over the last 2 years have only been doing radio part time while working in other fields.

Any thoughts from those who have either been to one of these Career Fairs or in my shoes?
Thanks!

I don't wear your Bruno Magli's, but my thoughts are:

If you want to try something new in radio, your job experience will benefit you more than the dopey college kid who still picks their nose.

If you want to get back into radio, everyone there will understand that radio is in our blood, so again, your job experience and skills will be more attractive to employers over any dopey college kid who still picks their nose.

Sorry to all who read this board and pick their nose.

Remember that there's a certain amount of window dressing applied to the IBA fair. One all-inclusive job fair enables to the participating stations to meet their FCC EEO and recruitment requirements without holding one of their own. Some of the stations will be there just to be able to say they were. While a few may be serious about looking for candidates. Wear a nice jacket and a tie and good luck.

There's no denying that this "job fair" is primarily an EEO event.

What do you mean by awkward position? If you meet the friggin' GM and he/she says; "you should call the program director," that gives you an excuse/reason to send a copy of your demo and give the PD a follow-up call. You can say; "I had the opportunity to meet your GM and blah, blah, blah." Trust me, there will be A LOT of GM's there.

Ultimately, it will be your on-air skills that get you hired. But whether we want to admit it or not, we're ALL salespeople. You're just selling your skills to a potential employer instead of schlepping spots. Good luck and make sure that aircheck sounds awesome!
