Wow... after hearing it yesterday for the first time, I really like HD Radio. I understand the Oasis and Jack have been testing here recently, and now KZPS, Sunny, and Kiss FM are doing the same. Now... where to find a receiver for my truck...

Just be careful about buying early generation or first generation equipment.
As we all know, new technology is always ridiculously expensive.
I've been told that IBOC really stands for "I've Been Over Charged".

Since about 4/2005 actually

For at least month or two now; the IBOC sidebands have been
observable on a spectrum analyzer anyway for that length of
time ...

At the time I 'surveyed' the FM band there were three stations
exhibiting IBOC 'wings' - I forget exactly which ones at the
moment.

Check for 'flash upgrade-ability', as in firmware updates

I wonder if these first units will have the capability to
to be 'field upgragable' as far as their firmware/software
in the case that 'new' formats or changes take place to
the over-the-air protocol or the compression/codec routines.
they COULD build units that interface to your PC via a USB
connection for updating via the internet ...

Just hypothesizing here, given how some other 'high-end'
electronic gear is capable of field upgrades and bug
mitigation.

Re: Check for 'flash upgrade-ability', as in firmware updates

Fry's in Irving had a half-dozen of Kenwood;s IBOC tuners on the shelf. Unfortunately, they were of the first generation single stream type. The latest "standard" for IBOC FM is the "NPR Multistream" format that supports two 48 kbps. program stteams simultaneously. Kenwood says their original unit can be upgraded for about $60.00 and a return to the factory. Look for the "NPR Multicast" logo on the box before you buy...and then be prepared to be really PISSED OFF when yet another "standard" is announced NEXT week!

Hey, there! Thought you had dropped off the planet there for awhile. Hope you're doing well. ;-)
