SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — Roy Loney, the fiery lead singer who fronted legendary San Francisco proto-punk garage rockers The Flamin’ Groovies before splitting off for a solo career, has died at age 73.

The news first surfaced that Loney had passed away Friday morning during an operation in a Facebook post by band friend and noted New York City punk rock photographer Roberta Bayley.

The San Francisco Chronicle later reported that Loney died of severe organ failure at the CPMC Davies Campus in San Francisco.

The band would also pay tribute to Loney with a post on its official Facebook page.

He was part of the Bay Area music scene in the 1960's
 
"Iconic" is way overused in headlines everywhere. This one, in connection with the lead singer of a band with a cult following at best, is particularly grating. Of course, baby boomers have the unfortunate tendency to regard any touchstone of their teen/college years as iconic.
 
Rolling Stone called them "influential garage rock group" but I lived in S.F then and had never heard of them. I think 'iconic' is indeed, in this case anyway, overused.

Search for "iconic" in Google News sometime. Among the things classified as "iconic" right now are a goal in an under-23 soccer tournament in Tehran, an Art Deco-style building on Long Island, nine foods commonly eaten in Nevada, a cross-country trail in Israel, 10 voice-acting roles of somebody named Patrick Warburton, and a drive-in restaurant in Clarkston, Washington. Really.
