I'd Like To Help Tom Mitchell, It's Only Fair

I thought that it's only fair to help Tom (Russ) out since he did me a solid by tankin the summer book for X.

Here's what you do and don't tell you're upper management guys where you got it, claim that you came up with the plan like you claim that your morning show on Q is successful because of you.

We all agree that B-Cuntry doesn't need to own the top spot. So what you do is move 95X to Lite (since Lite blows chunks and has no purpose). You'll be able to keep your "rock" flanker to protect the cash cow Q, and by putting a solid country competitor up against B-Cuntry then you'll be able to move Q up further in the 12+ and probably the 25-54 rankings. Even if you get 1/3rd of B-Cuntry's listeners, you'd be doing better than you're currently doing or going to do in the next year with 95X. 1/3'd of a 14 is around a 4.5, and it'd be in a better selling demo and you're group may be able to re-coup what you would've lost in revenue due to X. You'll be able to tell the higher ups that the revenue is down on X due to it's move to a smaller signal, but show an increase in revenue because you're now going head to head with B-Cuntry. It'll help Q show better growth and show a real attempt to make market strides rather than accepting your fate. If you really wanted to stir the deal, you'd put a real hip hop station on the Lite channel, a Country on the 95X channel, and keep Q where it is, then you'll put Q in a position to move into the #1 slot.

If you were a smart person, you'd push this idea because it's reasonable and realistic, but you wont because you are prejudice against the messenger. This makes you an Idiot, but we already knew that.

As long as we're trying to help Mr. Mitchell, I thought I'd throw in my own two cents on the radio rock wars here in Syracuse. First, a snippet from Tuesday's P-S...

"Classic rock WTKW/WTKV-FM (TK99/TK105) at No. 5 continued to get some of its best ratings ever, although its 5.6 share was down from its 6.2 in the spring. The station claims it was the main beneficiary when listeners fled album rock WAQX-FM (95X) earlier this year after 95X dropped shock jock Howard Stern's morning show.

Among morning show hosts, TK's Dave Coombs and Glenn "Gomez" Adams finished No. 5 in the summer with a 5.9 share overall, up from a 3.3 a year earlier.

Stern's replacements on 95X, Guy "Beaner" Patton and Ken Heron, finished in 10th place with a 2.8 share, compared with a 12 share and No. 1 finish for Stern locally in summer 2004. 95X overall finished No. 9 this summer with a 3.2 share."

A few questions: How good can a "syndicated" morning show be when it can't even outperform the overall station's numbers (3.2 to 2.8)??? Isn't it kind of unfair to expect healthy ratings on a Rock station from a couple of giggly guys who SOUND as if they're trying to appeal to women on a Top-40 station? Wouldn't it be like having Martha Stewart join John Madden and Al Michaels in the MNF booth or choosing Hulk Hogan as your spokesman for tampons? It wouldn't work, would it? You may as well throw on Siegfried and Roy. At least one of them might get mauled by a tiger during a morning show. Think of the ratings bonanza for that!!!

Gomez & Dave are probably rejoicing at X's choice of morning programming in much the same way that morning shows in Philly, NYC, Boston, etc. are dancing a jig at the prospect of facing David Lee Roth as a competitor. They're probably already spending their future bonuses.

Here is a list of shows Mr. Mitchell should consider before it's too late:

-Matt in the Morning (Driscoll may be out of a job soon and you might get great rates for morning remotes from some of his old bar cronies)
-Congel & Reith (blowing smoke up your crack weekdays from 6-10)
-Coach Mac & Coach P (not too eloquent, but at least they win!)
-Danny Bonaduce (he's available...again)
-Ellen Degenerate (lesbians bring great male #s, right?)
-Benny Mardones (a low-budget David Lee Roth knockoff for Syracuse)

On second thought, maybe there aren't too many decent options after all. Never mind.

So much for collegiality. Ahhh, normalcy returns to the 'Cuse board. And that's the way we like it. (Uh-huh, uh-huh...)

Generous of you to offer your advice to Mr. Mitchell, even if it is a Trojan horse.

I'd offer that 95X is far from a dead station, not even in the ICU. Yeah, it's got tubes up its nose and a bag at its side, but it's a lot stronger than some posters give it credit.

I'd submit that it needs refurbishing, not a tear down. Somebody has to decide just what the hell it is and who it's primary customers are.

Stern's gone. The whole scene was a fiasco. The station should have cut Howard when the Clear Channel stations made the move, using the guise of "protecting our license" (yada, yada, yada.) Sure, it was transparent to guys like us who are/were in the biz, but it's salable and there's a shadow of truth to it.

This will bring guffaws from many. They should have put Ryno on AM drive, at least to absorb the initial body blows and lighten the load. Say what you/we will, Ryno had an act, like it or hate it. He was "local" and better known than the Cletus and Frack show that's sucking methane in the morning now. If Ryno survived the post-Howard hurricane, 95X would have a morning guy. If he self-imploded, the suits could have bought some time to put together a "Plan-B."

Rather than convert 95X to country, I'd get it back to Classic Rock with a healthy dose of compatible new and re-current rock and position it as the heritage station it is (was) for so many years in the 'Cuse. ("Everything That's Rock") That might spell trouble for you Bone, but you seem to enjoy trouble and you'd no doubt concoct a plan to deal with it.

As for country, I'd put that format on Lite and become the thorn in B's assets. Here again, it's a matter of creative programming positioning David against Goliath with the right music, attitude and promos to get under Goliath's skin. You know how the game is played, Bone.

You'd get more outta that little FM teapot with the proper mix of country than with Lite AC. If they're concerned about losing the paltry "women" numbers that they need to get on some buys, country would deliver more than Lite. Citadel has a pretty good reputation with country in other markets, so why not let 'er rip in Syracuse.

It takes pride, smarts and brass balls. Live it, breathe it, love it. The fun is as much in playing the game well as it is in winning... of course, it's always better to play well and win.</font>

Gee, then Citadel just missed a big opportunity. They could have put Gomer on the new Lite Country. Gol-l-l-l-l-e-e-e-e, he would have sounded perfect there.

Re: I'd Like To Help

Now, Mike, please be honest ... take out the fact that I'm the one saying it ... is it not sound thinking?

You'll notice that I didn't say "your theory sucks, blows, etc."

I offered only that 95X isn't as "dead" as some might think. Your theory is as good as mine, mine as good as yours. My theory is a bit more cautious than yours, which is balls-out-bold.

I wouldn't be so quick to sh*t-can X's format in favor of country. In my opinion, there's definitely room for another country station in Syracuse.

As you pointed out, when one station is collecting that many shares and not being challenged, why not take a shot? It would be better done on the Lite frequency. Those who live in the metro would know better than I, but when I've been in the area, Lite's signal is clean, bright and strong. A credit to Dave Edwards' expertise, no doubt.

It really matters not, because we're talking hypothetically. Additionally, I'd be surprised if Citadel went Jack, Bob or Dick on any one of its Syracuse FMs.

(Watch, next week I'll be proven wrong. Well, it wouldn't be the first time.)

Not to Mention...

...that taking "X" country would make life a LOT easier for you, 'Bone.

But, nice try!

Can I not just be a broadcaster with an opinion? I find it unbelievable that I face as much bigotry on this board as I do. What have I ever done to you guys? I'm smart enuff. I'm good enuff. And dog-gone-it, people like me.

I've been watching this love-fest from afar and it sickens me. Buffalo guys makin' nice with one of the biggest antagonists on the Syracuse baord. WTF is this, the "kinder, gentler, Bone?" Now a man with a sense of humor?

As a Buffalo board semi-regular, I know Radknowski and Roxalot are responsible for their share of bomb throwing on the Buffalo board, and what do they do when they post on the Syracuse board? They play "Patti-cake with Pettibone."

Next thing y'know, Hillary will be voting "yes" on Alito.

Enough!

I've always had a sense of humor. I find myself very amusing. Remember, to thine own self be true. To the rest be antagoistic and arrogant because that's what everyone wants to believe anyway.

Also, I can see Hillary voting "yes" on Alito since she's trying to be more centrists and it's a battle the Democrats can't win ... so, your analogy was lacking ... a better analogy is that Chuck Schumer would vote "yes" on Alito.
