Ideas for WHIZ

Run the station as a simulcast of 105.7, on about a 30 minute delay
(have some Brew and then a WHIZ)

-or-

Tune in a little while after I have had some of "The Brew"

Darn it, that is some funny stuff.

I think it will be an AC just like the new 106.7 Dublin signal will be. We seem to be getting new signals so they can be programmed as AC's, right?

As far as the signal, it should be pretty OK all over all but northwest Franklin County according to my investigation (I'm not an engineer). The downtown blanket area will clobber it of course. Previous posts suggest it's going to be a rim shot at best. We'll see won't we!

They can't get too close to WDHT 102.9 in Springfield or that 102.3 Fox thing up north can they.

WHIZ Talent

Anyone ever listen to WHIZ's FM? What is there format? Do they have any good on air talent? How will they fit into the Columbus market?

They do a pretty good job for a such small market hometown Hot AC.. imaging wise they are horrible. The on air talent is average for the market size.. but not something you would ever find in Columbus.. even on a weekend. Lets just say.. we better hope someone is planning to put something completely new on there, or it wont be much of a treat.

Wow! So it sounds like they'll need a complete overhaul? You're telling me they don't have a single good personality then huh? Sad to hear that some people will probably be losing their jobs in order for higher-ups pockets to be lined.

I would say its safe to say that WHIZ-FM (Z102) sounds like a polished college station with jocks that have never had any coaching of any kind. It works in Zanesville b/c they are the only thing with that format.. however Columbus is a completely different story...

With that in mind, I have to wonder how many other small market stations fall into the same trap? I've worked in small markets before, and I can tell you that most of the owners I've encounterered seem to view consultants and "coaching" as an expense and/or an annoyance....mostly to the detriment of the overall sound of their stations. This attitude seems to be especially prevelant in markets where the station in question is the "only game in town", so there's no "need" to rock the boat and tighten up imaging, etc. Any thoughts?

Being successful in any competitive market means not laying down for dead and begging to be slaughtered when competition comes after you. It takes cojones to be competitive. They should stay in Zanesville.

Re: WHIZ Talent

Agreed. Maybe it's naive, but I'm from the old school that believes the station should stay put and serve its longtime home market. I understand the economics involved in a case like this, but I have to wonder if Columbus really needs (or can support) another move-in...and will WHIZ really make more dough in the capital city than in Zanesville?

IMO, if all we're doing is moving stations to the nearest big market because of shareholders with visions of dollar signs in their heads, then it calls into question the original purpose of the station. Did de-regulation sound a death knell for the "public interest, convenience and necessity"? Just curious...

I dont see at all how WHIZ could make more money in Columbus than Zanesville.. they have deep roots and lots of heritage in zanesville.. everyone in southeastern Ohio knows what WHIZ is. Every school and business in the area knows WHIZ as THE community resource for anything... WHIZ is Zanesville.. thats what the call letters stand for "We're Here In Zanesville"..

Now they are going to pick up and move to a completely new city where they will need to start from scratch in every aspect and they plan to make "more" cash... got me fooled!

The only way i could possibly EVER see this being a money maker is if someone (another media outlet from Columbus) is buying WHIZ-FM and Hank Littick saw nothing but dollar signs... and that is believable.

Re: WHIZ Talent

Isn't WHIZ-FM the #1 station in the Muskingum, Morgan, Perry County area? If their DJ's and imaging is as bad as some of you are saying, I'd hate to hear the other stations in the Zanesville and surrounding area who are behind WHIZ in the ratings.

WHIZ is #1 for one reason... HERITAGE!

WCVZ (92.7 Joy FM) is the best sounding station image wise... but they are contemporary Christian.. so alot of people turn it off for that reason.. all the other stations around are either satellite fed, Columbus bleed-overs or Cambridge.. but WCVZ is by far the best sounding station... then again it is programmed by CVCO in Columbus.. you can definetly tell the difference.

I'm thinking with a name like "castingcrowns" (a contemporary Christian band) you must be affiliated with WCVZ. Plus you seem to know quite a bit about them. No wonder you think they're the best. Can anyone else who's listen to Zanesville radio tell me about the stations there, particularly WHIZ? Who are their jocks, where'd they come from? What kind of morning show do they run?

Does your family work for WCVZ? So when was the last time you personally listened to WHIZ? Who were their personalities when you heard them? Aside from heritage, what makes them stand out in Zanesville....local programming, people, sports...what is it? They must be doing something right.

I dont have any family that is affiliated with WCVZ in anyway... I used to live in zanesville, i grew there, went to school there and moved after i gratuated when i got a gig in south bend, indiana.. i dont live there anymore.. my family still does. i admit wcvz was my fav. station to listen to because of music choice..

anyway, the last time i heard whiz was in september.. they sounded just like they did 10 years ago.. the only change i noticed was newer music. There jocks are all local talent from southeast ohio.. Z102 is popular for a few reasons... 1- affiliation with the tv station, 2- they are the only choice for local programming, and 3- they are THE information leader. 4- music. they are the ONLY Hot ac station around, and they have the most powerful signal.. so they win the "in office listening" game...

Thanks for the info. Do they run a syndicated morning show or is it local too? Sounds like the logical thing for WHIZ to do would be to stay local in Zanesville rather than jump to Columbus. Sounds like they've got it made there.

They run a local morning show.. nothing on the station is syndicated except i believe a weekend show or 2... otherwise all local all the time.

Their jocks are affordable, local talent and I think they have squeezed out all the performance they can from them, so I'm not sure it's a lack of coaching that's the problem. Brian Wagner, the PD/OM is a smart, talented guy, so I'm sure he works with them to improve their on-air delivery.

The morning guy - Jared Stewart - used to do middays, but moved to mornings after Brian Wagner moved upstairs. Does a decent job. The show is mostly music, with news/weather/sports updates mixed in. They are information heavy, running both network and local news updates. They occasionally have a local guest on and they run some network stuff, like Leno's previous night monlogue. There isn't much personality on the show, it's more the DJ is there to fascilitate the different pieces.

The rest of the jocks are pretty below average - particularly the afternoon guy - Jeff Ball - who is downright awful. For a tiny market, it's probably the best they can do. The imaging is bad, but it used to be about 1000% worse before they recently overhauled it. Now it's passable, before it was embarrasing.

That said, they put on the best available local product for the audience.
It's a shame for the station to move. The only other options for locally are contemporary christian, country and WWJM-FM 105.9 ("The Mix"), which is Hot AC but bird-fed 24/7, and personality show heavy, with Bob and Sherri, Pam Stone and Matt and Ramona.

The AVC stations in Cambridge bleed over, and they do an awfully good job with some local content for a market even smaller than Zanesville, but they are focused on Guernsey County and east, rather than Muskingum and Licking counties.
