"Idol" Finale: Lowest-Rated Ever

I'd be curious to see where the numbers went if they dumped Seacrest. IMHO, he is one of the most annoying individuals on television right now.

And apparently, these days, "annoying" will score you a dozen deals with many different media outlets...

Glad to hear it performed poorly! Now maybe WTIC-TV (FOX) channel 61 of Hartford can put their pom-poms away and actually do what they're supposed to do at 10 pm...report news! :(

GOOD! I sincerely hope that happens! Although I like Kelly Clarkson, I've never watched a single minute of American Idol, and I feel so much better knowing that! :D

And radio too. Apparently, some stations are dumping Ryan's show and going back to local & live. Obviously, the term "over-exposure" doesn't exist in Seacrest's vocabulary. Too bad.

Maybe it will hasten the demise of reality shows that much quicker starting with American Idol, Survivor, etc.

American Idol is a talent show (of sorts) and could also be thought of as a game show (think Gong Show).

Survivor is a game show.

Neither is reality.

I guess your version of reality shows as you comparing them to game shows varies to my version of reality shows as being well... reality shows. Wheel Of Fortune, Jeopardy!, Password, Family Feud, The Price Is Right are game shows. American Idol, Survivor, Dancing With The Stars, So You Think You Can Dance, I Get That All The Time, Apprentice, Celebrity Apprentice, Hell's Kitchen, The Bachelor, The Bachelorette, any other reality show are all reality shows.

What about The Amazing Race?

By the way, Dancing With The Stars' finale got about 19 million viewers, but it doesn't matter; the ratings for this season have proven a few points:

1. They can stand out on their own against Idol,
2. Two hosts are better than one (Tom Bergeron -- who has been at this longer than Seacrest -- and Brooke Burke), and
2. Judging ALWAYS comes in threes (Just ask Len, Bruno, and Carrie Ann)!

Next season could be THE season DWTS may unseat Idol as TV's #1 show, something ABC hasn't had since "Who Wants To Be a Millionaire" was tops over a decade ago.

Idol finale quick review: Trying to do too much with no real plan. Lots of celeb guests, but no rhyme or reason. This show could have easily been an hour and been just as effective. A mish-mash of everything, trying to please too many viewers with too much. Hard to watch. Please get some TV vets in there next year who know how to put together an entertaining finale.

Yes, because in a hundreds-of-channels universe, anything that isn't to your individual liking must be banished forever. No one may enjoy something different than what you deem acceptable.

::)

Just offering an opinion, dude. Last I checked, this is a major part of what "discussion" is defined as on this site. Don't agree, why not explain why, instead of attack? But if it makes you feel better, then fine, go for it!

There is nothing 'real' about any of the shows you mention save perhaps Hell's Kitchen. The others are either games (Survivor), talent (Idol, DWTS and SYTYCD) or just unscripted situation dramas. IGTATT could be compared to the old People Are Funny or Candid Camera. PAF and CC were not referred to as reality shows and for good reason, they weren't. Still aren't.

Simple, can't stand Idol. Nor Dancing with the Stars, Big Brother, nor most unscripted (or reality or alternative or whatever label you want to apply--that's a silly semantic debate). (Disclosure: I enjoy many 'traditional' game shows, a la Jeopardy.) But why is it so horrific that people who happen to like something else--say, a talent competition, which is hardly new to TV in recent years--may find a show to their liking? It isn't. When enough people stop watching, any individual show will go away, just as always. But the fact is millions of people do happen to enjoy the harmless stuff like Idol or Stars, and may well detest what I like (or not--it's not like you can only like "genre A" OR "genre B"). I don't consider it a sign of TV getting better if the shows I like go away, nor is it a sign of things getting better if the shows I dislike but others enjoy experience the same fate. A talent competition harms no one--no one is forced to watch.

I believe the ratings started to drop once Paula Abdul left. Add Ellen DeGeneres is the biggest mistake for the show. I don't see how Ellen has any knowledge about someone's singing talent. To me, she has no talent herself as a comedian. Ever since I first heard of her, I never liked her comedy. I'd yawn at it. Her ABC show sucked too. Even after coming out, her show overall didn't do well in the ratings (only 2 weeks did her show end up in the top 10: the Puppy Episode 1 went to #1, even after WBMA-LP refused to air the episode, & Puppy Episode 2 was #10). I make every effort to not watch Ellen. That means I don't even tune into her talk show on WMAQ-TV in Chicago. I can guaranteeing you that Ellen will likely be the death of American Idol. Most of the talent from the contestants either is good or bad, the judges will be there longer than the contestants will be, and they have to be people that the audience can relate to. Simon Cowell can be blunt with his criticism, but he works behind the scenes of the music industry, & has an idea of what works and what doesn't. Paula Abdul & Randy Jackson have worked as musicians themselves and also have an idea what works and what doesn't. Ellen knows nothing about singing. Her specialty is comedy, and in my opinion, doesn't do a good job at that. So the judges matter just as much as the contestants, and Fox refuses to see that. With Simon leaving American Idol, that leaves just Randy Jackson as the only original judge left on the show. Simon & Paula balanced each other out, but not sure where Randy fit in between. I can guarantee you that next season, ratings will drop even further unless Fox can find a judge or 2 that will make up for both Paula & Simon being gone from the show, & Ellen's place on the judge's panel is not it.

But they can't be classified as "game shows", because then it would be illegal to "manipulate" or "influence" the results, as all these shows do.
