"Idol" To Return January 17th; Scheduling Won't Be Changed

Just one day after judge Simon Cowell signed for another five seasons of the show (I would think the contracts of the other judges, Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul; plus that of host Ryan Seacrest, will be extended to match Cowell's), Fox announced that "American Idol 5" will premiere on Tuesday, January 17th. Fox also announced, as reported by Broadcasting and Cable.com (registration may be required) that contrary to rumors over the last few weeks, "Idol" will remain in the timeslots (Tuesdays 8-9 P.M. ET/PT; Wednesdays 8:30-9 P.M. ET/PT) the show has been broadcast in since it's premiere in 2002.

There had been much speculation that "Idol" would be moved to Wednesdays (for the "performance" show) and Thursdays (for the "results" show), with both shows thought to be scheduled for 9-10 P.M. ET/PT as to give late local newscasts on most Fox affiliates a huge lead-in. But that won't happen, at least this season.

The reason why Fox looked at this change was due to the fact that Thursday night is the most sought-after night for TV advertising, mainly for commercials from movie studios to plug films opening the next day.

The article announced that Fox's popular adventure/drama series "24" will begin it's fifth season on January 15th and 16th, and like last year, it will begin with two back-to-back episodes on both Sunday and Monday from 8 to 10 P.M. ET/PT before moving to Mondays at 9 P.M. ET on January 23rd, with one episode a week until the end of the season in May, where there will likely be two back-to-back episodes the final two weeks of the season (May 15th and 22nd) to end the season during the May sweeps.
