If 96 Wave-FM came back as a mainstream rocker, would it work?

If they decided to bring back 96 Wave-FM as a mainstream rocker, similar to what it was in the late 1980's, would it work? It would have to be on either Citadel's 96.9, or 95.9, so that the "96" would make sense. 96 Wave was a great station, and should have become a heritage rocker, but we know the rest...

Only 96.9 is Citadel.

The answer is maybe. But what is Mainstream? "Alternative Rock" stations can't even seem to find their way currently.

96wave isn't coming back. It's dead. If Apex wanted to bring it back, they would have brought it back when 95.9 signed on. The online site is even gone now.

In the long run, if the format keeps up with the times, WIOP will be much more viable format/station, especially now that they have Bill Shannon and Kain Cameron (Y102.5 did excellently when Bill was PD and Kain was very popular).

And why would Citadel bring something they never ran to 96.9....? However, to answer the question, maybe...but obviously better options were seen. We will never know.

With 95.9 and 101.7, I believe Apex has their hands full. Both stations appeal to the upper demos and are sure wins. As for an alternative/modern rock format in Charleston, the closest you can get is of course 98X, and if your open minded, 105.5 The Bridge. In my opinion, why can't Apex put Wave on that 99.3 translator and see how it goes? It working for Atlanta with 99X. Wave, like many other great stations, will always be a nostalgic memory. I'm sure Chucktown will get a new rock station one day. Just look at Florence!

Again, I think if Apex was going to bring Wave back, they would have before. They've had like 3 opportunities. It's not coming back. I think they will give the country thing all they've got and try to knock 96.9 off the map so they can then go after WEZL.

Well 96.9 has been stepping up their game. Both WEZL and WIWF make it past Moncks Corner as where WIOP does not. Also 96.9 has the stronger singal making it up to St. George. We should see what happens.

As for a format change someone should have went Hot AC as all Charleston really has is Y 102.5 which is AC/Oldies and Chuck is Adult Hits.

95.9 makes it into the Elloree/Santee area about 65% of the time while 96.9 is 100% some days and not usable others. Yes 96.9 is stronger in this direction to included St George but you have to pick your days to listen to them much like 96.1 use to be. 107.5 had a great transmitter location althou some claimed it wasn't strong enough in Charleston a friend of mine said the whole time it was in Ridgeville he could always hear it solid from Summerville to the coast except during band openings sometimes which I think this year proved can't be helped sometimes. I talked to the GM at 107.5 years back and was told he hated the transmitter location as this was keeping them from knocking down WEZL 103.5 so he had the antenna stack moved from this side of the tower around toward Charleston to gain more signal in that direction which caused their fringe signal in Columbia and Savannah which was quit respectable to drop out and give them one of the strongest signals 60 miles out in the ocean but the slightly stronger signal that the GM wanted didn't do a darn thing to help pull down 103.5 like he thought it would plus it gave 107.5 a weaker signal in St George their then city of licenesee and a stronger 10.7 IF problem with then 96.1. I don't care what the GM said at one time 107.5 had one heck of a signal and ideas althou good don't always work the way some people think they will.

The Wave is dead. At least for Apex. Has been for awhile and they're not touching the format with a 10 ft. pole.

Personally, the Wave still has "street cred" in Charleston, so I'd make any/every attempt to use that name on a rock station. Otherwise, it really doesn't matter...just do like Savannah, Columbia, and Myrtle Beach have done and just call it Rock ____.

Now, if somebody had some cajones and puts a rock format on a big stick, it's gonna trash 98X. Nothing personal against either of the LM stations, but they sound incredibly amateurish. Given their fairly weak ratings when they were competing against Wave, it would simply be a battle for the rock crown that would draw out for years with the more patient party being the victor.

Who would do it? 92.5 if the format tanks? 96.9? 98.9?

Someone did. Why has no one heard of 98.9 Chick FM?

98.9 is a fringe signal. Unless you get super-lucky with a niche format, its just not going to be a major player in the ratings. Now, news/talk on this signal would work OK in mono, but what type of programming are you going to get?

However, I'd be curious if 98.9 could be moved to Awendaw on one of those tall towers as a C3. It'd be a major power downgrade and may need to go directional to protect 98.7 in Beaufort (probably down to 1000w or less) but it's much closer to Charleston and would probably triple the current height.

They should have never dropped Spanish. I'll bet the Spanish-speaking audience are happy just to have a station and don't care about a premium-quality signal.
