**IF** CBS & NBC **WERE** To Somehow Merge...

Hi everyone:

I got to thinking about the April Fools Joke below and that got me to wondering something.

Just what WOULD an NBC/CBS combination look like if they merged like UPN & WB did?
Here's what I came up with for programming (Originating network is in parenthesis)

MON-FRI DAYTIME & PRIMETIME(Note: This is the NATIONAL lineup, local lineups would likely vary)
======================================

4:30 AM Early Today (NBC)

5:00 AM LOCAL NEWS

7:00 AM Today Show (NBC)

10:00 AM LOCAL PROGRAMMING (Or Days Of Our Lives from NBC on a one day delay)

11:00 AM Price Is Right (CBS)

12:00 NN LOCAL NEWS (Or Days Of Our Lives from NBC, reduced to 30 minutes)

12:30 PM The Bold & The Beautiful

1:00 PM As The World Turns (CBS)

2:00 PM Guiding Light (CBS)

3:00 PM LOCAL PROGRAMMING (Days Of Our Lives from NBC)

5:00 PM LOCAL NEWS

5:30 PM NETWORK NEWS (Produced by current NBC staffers and Anchored by Brian Williams, continuation of local news on East Coast stations)

6:00 PM LOCAL NEWS (Continued on East Coast stations)

6:30 PM LOCAL PROGRAMMING (NETWORK NEWS on East Coast stations, produced by current NBC staffers and Anchored by Brian Williams)

7:00 PM NETWORK PRIMETIME (LOCAL PROGRAMMING on East Coast stations)

8:00 PM NETWORK PRIMETIME (East Coast stations, continuation of Primetime elsewhere)

10:00 PM LATE LOCAL NEWS (Continuation of Primetime on East Coast stations)

MON-FRI LATE NIGHT:
===================

10:35 PM The Late Show With David Letterman (From CBS, continuation of Primetime on East Coast stations)

11:00 PM LATE LOCAL NEWS (East Coast stations, continuation of David Letterman elsewhere)

11:35 PM Tonight Show With Jay Leno (From NBC, David Letterman on East Coast stations)

12:35 AM Conan O'Brien (From NBC, Tonight Show on East Coast stations)

1:35 AM Greg Kinnear (From CBS, Conan O'Brien on East Coast stations)

2:35 AM Later (From NBC, Greg Kinnear on East Coast stations)

3:05 AM OVERNIGHT NETWORK NEWS (Or Late Local News rerun, continuation of Greg Kinnear on East Coast stations)

3:35 AM Later (From NBC - East Coast stations only)

3:40 AM OVERNIGHT NETWORK NEWS (For those who opted for late local news rerun, continuation elsewhere except East Coast stations)

4:05 AM OVERNIGHT NETWORK NEWS (East Coast stations, continuation elsewhere)

***That's the basic lineup I have & can think of. The Saturday lineup would be a combination of "Today" and Nickelodeon-produced shows (Since Discovery Kids and NBC parted company). Sunday lineup would be "Sunday Morning" from CBS followed by "Meet The Press" from NBC.

Key sports packages and sporting events would consist of the NHL (NBC), AFL (NBC), College Basketball (CBS), College Football (CBS, but NOT exclusive to the SEC), NFL (BOTH the AFC & Sunday Night packages), Wimbledon (sp?)(NBC) & U.S. Open Tennis (CBS)

Still haven't figured out which Primetime shows would make the cut though.

Thoughts anyone?

Let's have some fun with this. :)

Cheers :)

My only thought would be that As The World and Guiding Light would probably be dumped Before dumping the Young and the Restless as you did.

I simply forgot to list it (Thought about it two hours later though, but that was after I had turned the monitor off for the night).

That said though, there's one of three ways it could still fit into the lineup.

1). Drop DAYS OF OUR LIVES (Either by outright cancellation or selling it to ABC)

2). Drop GUIDING LIGHT (Same way as #1)

3). Drop the last hour of the TODAY show, move local programming back to 9:00 AM, PRICE IS RIGHT to 10:00 AM and slip Y&R in at 11:00 AM.

But regardless of whichever of the two soaps (GL or DOOL) survives the cut, East Coast stations won't have a 3:00 PM soap anymore as there just wouldn't be any room for it unless it was only a 30 minute show like B&B.

How's that? :)

Cheers :)

This is pointless.

Even "if" CBS and NBC merged, the daytime schedule would be the least of anyone's worries.

If you must play this game, how about discussing how the primetime schedule would shakeout?
______________

Kim...

If you examine the content of the primetime shows on both networks...there are definitely hits and misses! The biggest problems are "the hype" surrounding the programming...and the cramming of spot clusters. Unless the show or event is of particular interest to the point where a viewer can tolerate 3-4 minutes of ads....the show will get tivo'd (or taped) for replay at a future time!

Doing this eliminates the need to sit through a bunch of horrible national and local ads (and terrible promos) for shows that wouldn't have a 'snowball's chance in hell!'

"K.M." does not spell "Kim".

That didn't answer my question, although I agree with you.
______________

Re: This is pointless.

One thing for sure about primetime, is that they would probably keep the CSI and Law and Order franchises. That would fill at least nine hours of programming. Also, it is possible that ER and Dateline would be on the schedule as well. As for the rest, I'd say the majority of CBS dramas and NBC sitcoms, with the addition of new programming. As for their news department, I would think that Katie Couric would end up going nowhere for the moment...

That's nothing.

Wouldn't it be REALLY interesting if CNN, NBC, ABC, and CBS were to ALL merge into ONE HUGE network?

They could call it "CNNBABCBS"!!!! :D

HEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHE!!! j/k

No Young & The Restless would be on in this time slot. THIS IS ONE OPF THE TOP RATED SOAPS> NO WAY WOULD THAT BE CANCELED!!
> 1:00 PM As The World Turns (CBS)
1:30 would be nore like it
> 2:00 PM Guiding Light (CBS)
NO WAY..Sadly THIS WOULD BE THE FIRST SHOW TO GO!!
Bold & Beautiful would be on at 2:30. Its unlikely that would be canceled. In fact CBS is considering making this an hour. Still in a merger it would eb laft to 30 minutes.
> 3:00 PM LOCAL PROGRAMMING (Days Of Our Lives from NBC)
Days Of Our Lives would run here.
> 5:00 PM LOCAL NEWS

About right

> 12:35 AM Conan O'Brien (From NBC, Tonight Show on East Coast
> stations
> 1:35 AM Greg Kinnear (From CBS, Conan O'Brien on East Coast
> stations)

NO WAY...these shows would go.

The following stations would certainly be left idependents
Off the top of my head:
11 KNTV San Francisco (poor signal and low ratings)
7 WHDH Boston (CBS owns WBZ TV)
62 WWJ TV Detroit (poor signal..inferior to just about every station in the market)
19 WOIO Cleveland (inferior to 3 WKYC)
11 WPXI Pittsburgh (CBS owns KDKA)
6 WTVJ Miami (poor signal)
46 WCGL Atlanta (lack of establishment
13 KOVR Sacramento (inferior to KCRA...On the other hand there would be no Guiding Light anywhere anyhow. That show would finally be canceled anyway)
Other markets would be worked out.

Still this is an extremely doubtful scenerio. NBC and CBS could never merge.
