Will All Access last the year? You can tell they're really searching for ideas on that show - new segments, new chatter, new remote ideas.

What kind of morning show would succeed in that format? Do their listeners want Shertenlieb-esque antics (I'm white-collar yet thought he was funny..) Do they want a Dave "Just play the music, son" Marino type show?

Do they take their best asset - Mara - and move her into mornings, like before?

Who else is available that fits that format? I actually think Jimmy Baron and Leslie Framm would fit that format. He's topical but an irritant...they'd need a quarterback.

Will the format last the year? I kinda hope it does. I think its a great station - in terms of music - but is just a little too hip for its own good. You really can't name another station in town that has taken a chance since Power99 flipped in 1992.

2 cents...though I think something will happen this year. That stick is worth too much money to keep failing forever...

The morning show on DAVE has been bad since day one. Barnes is so bad and giggle box is not much better. The best thing that could happen to that station would be to get rid of that morning show.

They have some real talent over at Dave with Sully, Aaron, Margot, and I've caught Eric a couple of times. I don't think the station is going to go anywhere. I think that it fits a niche none of the other stations really hit. It's definitely in my Top 5 of Atlanta stations.
______________

Somthing has puzzled me for a long time.
Why do some folks think Mara Davis is an extraordinary talent? And I don't mean to be negative here...Mara is OK - but there is(are) better "talent" on WRAS, WRFG, and WREK. And that's also true for most of the other female "stars" out there.
At least Mara is not intellectually vacuous like most other female personalities.....why do we tend to like "airhead" radio chicks??
And, to be fair, the radio is chock full of adolescent twirp-speak from most of the guys too. These are the kind of kids (male jocks)who used to get a wedgie at recess every day....why do they get to program radio??

Re: If Mara Davis is the best they have.....

> > Tom you have really said a mouth full. It really amazes me, that we all like the chicks that come across like morons.. Mara is a good talent, but for
sure Ive heard great talent on all of the college stations, and WRFG as well.
Its also amazing that folks like Bob Bailey have ended up on Sunny 100. While working in the Roswell area today, I listened to him, and hes still good, and what a delivery for classic rock radio.
______________

Re: If Mara Davis is the best they have.....

Is Bill Gates the best programmer? Businessman?
Is Spielberg really the best director? (did you SEE that turd 'War of the Worlds'? ah, but what a box office smash)
Is American Idol the best television show? Really?

Not sure what you're asking. IN truth (hold on, here comes one of those contradictory philosphical literati allegories that MUST be true because they are confusing:

The BEST isn't always the best.

Is it true? I don't know-- I'm just trying to sell this stack of bumper stickers. But, as with the examples above, they are "what-we-want-best" I'll call it. And, hell, that took me a little while to come up with and it still doesn't quite nail it.

Mara-- when her buffoon PD isn't doing the passive-aggressive hover-- isn't brilliant, isn't hilarious. She's your best friend. That's what radio should be. Most people listen to the radio ALONE. In their car, jogging, chambering the round in your basement while you take that final belt of Wild Turkey... most people are by themselves listening to the radio.

The "best" jock, sometimes, just makes listeners feel like the DJ is right there, sitting next to them. Mara is not the best. But to a lot of people, I bet, she's one of their best friends.

And they've never met her.

Re: If Mara Davis is the best they have.....

Was anyone else present when the aforementioned DJ followed a very talented DJ named Caroline? She was the real deal.

no ... do tell!

She started out as Aunt Caroline..

then just became Caroline. Her persona in the beginning was kind of a female Don Rickles. She would insult callers, etc. That grew old and she went a little more mainstream. Wonder where she went?

Who is Sully?

With weekends like "presidents Dave weekend" and this weekends brilliance "Gold to Cold" (which I still don't get after hearing it explained a few times) they are grasping at straws - and trying WAY too hard. Play music, and be simple, that's what a AAA does. The creative team there really needs to re-think their approach - too cool for the room doesn't work! Ohh, and are you Rock without Rules anymore - the messages are mixed on the air.

I enjoy Dave, as well as the morning show. For me, it's a place where I know I can go and avoid dick and fart jokes, stories about how plastered people were the weekend before, and conversation around the political spectrum that applies to the lowest common denominator. And I know I'm going to get 4 songs an hour or so. Actually, I do wish they had a little more time to devote to bits that are really working, because it's often obvious they have to cut them short to get the songs in, but that's another topic. It's a nice mix, in my opinion. If I wanted endless chatter, I'd listen to AM Talk. If I wanted all music, I'd listen to my iPod or XM. And at least the topics are relatable. Book reviews, relationship issues, the occasional trivia bit, interviews, live acoustic performances. Rather than Herpes tests, having porn stars in the studio, or constantly badmouthing the competition.

What I don't get is the first post on this thread. New ideas and new segments? That's a criticism? All everyone ever does here is complain about how awful everything is, and now looking for other things to do makes it terrible as well? Come on. Not to mention, for people that seem to "hate" them so much, they sure do spend a lot of time listening to critique them. And, If you aren;t listening to the show and what they are doing this week, or this month, ot this year, how can you possibly have an educated opinion on the nature of the show? Rather strange when people launch into the multiple aspects of how bad something is when the obviously spend hours listening to the show they are tearing down.

All I ever see on this board is everyone hating everything. The problem is that people hide behind anonymity here, and it gives them a forum to lash out at their employer, co-worker, competitors, etc. while sitting behind the veil of a made-up email and screen name.

So, I'm sure the rage will now be directed at me, which is fine. But I'll say again, I enjoy Dave and the morning show. Much better content than other shows in the rock/pop radio arena because it's not geared toward someone under the age of 20 or people that still think "Git her done!" is funny. So, keep on keepin' on Barnes and Firfer. I have a good time listening.

"Into the breach, dear friends."

I'm sure CBS/Infinity will take that into account.

The only thing CBS/Infinity take in accout is if the station is making them money!... And the way their ratings are at the moment it must be a bitch to sell.

I agree. Mara connects with her audience. She has a lot of talent in my opinion. But like all the rest of the jocks other than the morning show. You can tell the PD has a leash on them.

I think Free Fm is in our future.

I think an all female morning show consisting of Mara, Yvonne Monet, and Firfir
might be interesting. I suppose you could drop a guy somewhere into the mix...

Just a thought.
______________

Don't worry Mara, I got your back

Mara is about as good as you can get for many reasons, some listed below. Unlike the other women on Dave-FM, she doesn't come off as ultra-intellectual, ultra-cool and ultra-I'm better than you (Margot and their PD whose name escapes me.) Most women on the air are breathy, pseudo-vixen who put the cause of women on the air back 25 years or high-pitched hyenas whose sole job is to laugh at unfunny, scripted comedy. Mara is like her listeners, smart, clever, loves music and likes to have fun on the air. At times it seems like she is entertaining herself only. She has knowledge of Atlanta and the community that is second to none. She has immersed herself in Atlanta, not bad from a nice Jewish girl from Miami.

If Dave decides to 86 the All Access show, Mara would be an ideal replacement, just like she was when Moby sailed away.

Mara, if you read this, remember not to go up the gentiles and say, "Excuse me, you have a little shmutz on your keppe" tomorrow.

I agree. All these theme weekends fall on deaf ears. I lose interest in them. I don't listen to the radio for a theme. I listen for good music. I stay on the station for a good DJ. Sounds like the PM is being lazy and doesn't want to program anything for the weekend.

Mara's just that, a great friend. A great friend jock is someone that is strong in the time slot she's in. She's not strong enough to be a morning jock. Morning drive has to be entertaining as well as being your only friend in the car while you're fighting 285 hell. All Access can have that if they get some more creative producers. Someone mentioned Shirtenlieb (or however Rick spells his name). I thought he would've been great. I'm sure he would've stayed at 99X if Susquehanna would've opened up their pocketbooks a little more. They wouldn't be in the nose dive that they're in right now.

I’m resurrecting this one for a few reasons…3 years later and the only changes at Dave are that they’re on the 3rd PD. Read through these posts, they still make sense. Over the years the morning show consistently lacks intelligence and knowledge of music. Why can’t a show discuss current events AND play a great killers song? The demo isn’t all young liberals anymore. We’re a bit older, with a bit more money and a bit better taste in music. They have some really good talent at 929 that is completely underutilized. Love Mara, love the Friday 80’s show/Tues Mix and love Margot. Let’s get Yvonne and Andy some more time. These two could bring some goodness to the mix. Come on Dave! Don't insult me with the Zakks and Jimmys of the world.

I have spoken.
