If it bleeds it leads

Please...deranged people are hardly the fault of any TV station.

Newspeople like gore, but they also like "convenient." :)

Which explains why so many "live just to be live" shots are done right outside the station
with a busy freeway in the background, or on the roof of the station with a cityscape shot
in the background. Even at night, and that's much more conveeeeeenient than driving
miles away to set up in front of a darkened building where some event (the subject of the
useless live shot) happened eight hours ago.

On one hand you can't blame the tv station for covering a story so close to home with such passion. However, a good ND should and would put this in perspective, and treat it like any other business. Afterall, lives in jeopardy are of the same value regardless of whether they work at a TV station or not.

Which is why they stuck to the facts & didn't try to somehow sensationalize it.

Not that they could anyway beyond Twitter & Facebook but still.....

Cheers :D

KSAZ does so many live shots by their station in front of the new courthouse (glass walls) or with a prominent neon old hotel sign in the background. And this one reporter, a guy named Dan Spindle, usually is the one out there.

The entire 'live-to-be-live" attitude is just ridiculous - especially on the late news. These days, they'll send reporters out to stand in the cold and dark in front of some building to talk about a story that happened there 7 hours before, and to introduce their 7 hour old videotape.

Now I realize these reporters make good six figure incomes (in major markets), so I'm not crying for them - but still - in a time in which TV stations are cutting back to save money, it seems like they could save some money by not employing so many reporters on the late shift - just keep a couple around in case an actual live (happening now) story breaks.

What I would do is bring them into the news set to talk about their story, not have to stand out there "live".

if you were a publicity seeking nutjob, I'd think you'd make a beeline straight for the
local TV station as your very first move.
