If it does not fit...

I can't help but think of O.J. Simpson trying on the glove when I think of D.P. Live moving to X103 ponto Nueve (that's on FM, for all those out in Sun City without digital radios).

No format Pratt is determined to fit his hand into a glove that is two sizes too small.

I don't want to say that D.P. Live lacks direction, but a sudden shift from targeting former D.P. listeners throughout the U.S. via the internet, to promoting his show on a Phoenix-based FM station does not make a lot of sense.

D.P. spent a boatload of cash to outfit his internet studios, only to abandon his new, sterile studios to the shared, non-sterile studios of X103 ponto Nueve. He claims that he will utilize the D.P. Live studios and create other online content, but who really listens to internet radio beyond Pandora and Slacker?

Does D.P. still hold enough name recognition in Phoenix to infuse new life into a ratings-stagnant station? Or will his long absence from FM (which is not the same as AM, for those of you in Sun City) lead to an early exit for D.P. Live , and the arrival of another Spanish station in Phoenix? Will Bill Johnson's Big Apple stay in business long enough so D.P. can have a helping of humble pie? Or will he have to settle for a dozen donuts from Bosa when X103 ponto nueve goes Spanish?? Inquiring minds want to know.

The D.P. Backyard BBQ has moved to Bill Johnson's Big Apple. Just tell them the Morning Mayor (Por la mañana el alcalde) sent you. If you don't deserve it, who does???

The Spanish word for point is "punto" not "ponto"...like you said...three times...so for all those folks in Sun City who you're ripping on...maybe youre the one who needs some humble pie!!! ;D

PS why are you even saying "103 ponto nueve" thrice? is it changing to a spanish format?

A wild tangent, brought to you by...

Bosa Donuts....mmmmmm!

Now that was a 80's flashback! :D

We now return you to our regularly-scheduled lamentations. ;D

Not to take this thread off course but.....there is a Bosa donut store located on Southern just east of McCLintock in Tempe.

I could definitely use a piece of humble pie. My Portuguese is a poor substitute for Spanish. Mind you, I think you will be happy to learn that I can still get my face slapped with some of the Spanish I know. ;D

Let's just say that I don't see the current format on X103 punto nueve as long-term, and the addition of no-format Pratt does not help the station either. There might be a spike in listeners during morning drive, but they will leave after D.P. Live signs off. People won't be tuning in to hear the music...and I'm not sure how much name recognition D.P. has left. There was another station (think country) built around the morning show--it did not last long; there was nothing to hold the listener's interest for the remainder of the day.

Btw, there is also a Bosa Donuts in Chandler; Arizona Ave and Ray, if I remember correctly.

... and if it DOES go es-pan-yole, maybe we can petition to get a KFMA repeater up here. I was down in Oro Valley on Friday and 92.1/101.3 runs circles around the X.

Jonathan L. would be proud....

And KWSS-LP, which routinely plays tracks Jonathan L. programmed for KUPD/KUKQ/etc., runs *miles* around KFMA. Speaking of which, I'd love to see the netcasted "Lopsided World of L" boomerang back to terrestrial AM/FM like Dave - maybe snag another Best of Phoenix from New Times when he's not even broadcasting from Phoenix anymore. That would really put X103.9 to shame.

Lopsided World could probably save X103.9. And KWSS is the closest thing we have to college radio; I hope they keep getting funding. they need a stronger signal in Mesa though.

Have a feeling that Dream will come true Very Very Soon ;D

Starting Mon August 22nd.. Lopsided World of L will air on KWSS Mon, Tues and Wed Nights 10pm-12mid.. Just finalized all the details :) And thanks to this thread for the inspiration behind making it happen.. Imported from Berlin.. Back on Phoenix Radio..

Stellar! I'm a HUGE fan of his show.

Dave Pratt sounded great!

Uh, not so sure about the no-format format on an alternative station... Someone would have to explain that reasoning to me as to how a programmer would allow that.

I'm going to take a wild guess here and say that the programming department at 103.9 was removed from the decision making process with regards to the musical format of the morning show. Pratt probably made it a condition of his employment that he could play pretty much whatever he wanted, and the suits at (fill in the company that owns the signal) were sufficiently wowed by the potential revenue that they gave Dave control on a silver platter.

Subverting a station's musical decisions to fiscal concerns is not unheard of, but it usually only happens in small markets. I remember a station manager in (fill in small market) basically turning our AM signal into a religious station at the behest of one very productive account exec. She even got her own show!

Well, it's not like you could tell Howard Stern to play x number of alternative songs on his show or else you wouldn't have carried it on the Edge back in the day. You know what the show is and if you want it you take it.

I'm really starting to agree with KOHS's first comment on this thread. Dave spent an entire segment this morning talking about his kid starting college. Um, hello? "Kids starting college" are his target audience. Why the (bleep) would he spend so much talking so much about something that *DISTANCES* him from his listeners? Nobody wants to hear a DJ who could be their dad. He played segments about Barney Frank farting and Michelle Bachman's Elvis faux pas - is it reasonable to expect X103.9 listeners to even know who Barney Frank and Michelle Bachman are? (Unless 'South Park' or Jon Stewart get to it first, not very likely.) And a huge red flag for me was when he was raving about what a huge box office hit Glee 3D was - um, Glee 3D was not a huge box office hit - thank god - it tanked at the box office, didn't even rank in the Top 10. The Jonas Brothers 3D movie was a bigger box office hit. How could somone who works in the business be so tone deaf?

KOHS was right - this is like the radio equivalent of the New Coke. I just hope Dave's getting paid handsomely for the gig.

Funny you should mention Jon Stewart.

If I'm not mistaken, Stewart is pushing 50. So is Pratt. Yet Stewart is not the "TV host who could be their dad," and despite his gray hair is actually quite popular with the demo that X103.9 is (or was) going after.

Also, I'm fairly certain that Stewart's show features political figures like Barney Frank and Michelle Bachmann, and yet doesn't seem anywhere near as out of touch as Pratt.

Could it be that age and even content are not the issue, but rather the presentation?

Yes, I'd agree it's the presentation - none of what I have heard has "clicked" for me yet - returning to KTAR and KWSS in the morning.

From what I have heard of his show this week it just seems like its a four hour infomercial for Dave Pratt Live.com. Way too much self promotion for me. I think its a horrible fit for X and agree that its not so much about the content of the show but how its presented. It seems like he has tried to do the exact same show on all four of the stations hes been on. The show hasn't changed or evolved at all even though the audience of the stations he's been on are drastically different.

Ford, that is so interesting to me that you bring up Pratt v Stewart! Pratt is only a year older than Stewart...yet to me it seems that Pratt could have 10 years on him!
Maybe because Stewart got his start on MTV, he'll always be considered cool & hip?

I would suspect that Stewart is surrounded by a core of 20-something writers, who keep him on target.
