If Jack has no jocks...

...then what would you call it if a station played the exact same music as Jack, but also had DJs?

If Jack works without disc jockeys, would it fail here in Pittsburgh if a station played the exact same music but also had DJ's?

Is it the lack of DJ's that makes Jack a success, or is it the music played?

If it's the lack of DJ's, then would other styles of music also work better here in Pittsburgh with no DJ's?

My opinion is that it's the total package.... the attitude is sort of "we got rid of everything you don't like about radio". Now for people who LIKE personailities, that's another story... but it seems we're now a vocal minority at best.

The one JACK station I know most about is in Dallas, and it's just music, no jocks, no news, no traffic reports... and it's doing really well.<P ID="signature">______________

Maybe this will be the new trend in radio, stations without Jocks. Ha Ha, only if Kiss Fm could pick up on that.

Basically radio in Florida is heading toward no jocks. Just in Tampa Bay we have:

WWRM-----3 jocks, Delilah all night.
WPOI-----2 jocks
WDUV-----1 jock
WXGL-----2 jocks
WGUL-----3 jocks

And lots of stations in the FT.Myers area do the same thing.

Remember 100.7 WWCL, Classy 101, circa 1985? They ran jockless for several months, and for some time after that had only morning and afternoon drive personalities. The consultant (Fairwest) started all its stations in this format by running jockless with requests for listener input, then added elements over a period of months. I think the Pittsburgh version ran at this minimal level longer than most.

The first format to turn a lack of air voices into a selling point was The Wave, an early smooth-jazz/AC concept, in 1987. This never made it to Pittsburgh, however, and all the stations running it eventually added jocks.

What about listeners who really like jocks with personalities, but who don't like boring liner card readers who have as much personality as a dead fish?

Then this may not be the only format they choose to listen to. However, I think most of the people who still care about personalities in music formats post on this board.<P ID="signature">______________

Jack-jocks

that's why we have choices on the PITTSBURGH radio dial. Not every station can be everything to everybody. It's a great thing about America- we have the freedom to choose and if you don't like the Jack format, you are pefectly welcome to not listen to them-- they will get by without you.

My point was that a DJ with an appealing personality can attract more listeners, while a DJ with a bland or boring personality won't attract. I don't think any questions that carefully picking what music is played makes a difference in attracting and holding listeners. I submit that carefully picking what people are put on the air as DJ's is equally as important.

To say that "listeners don't want DJ's" because they don't like bad or boring DJ's is like saying "listeners don't want music" because they reject songs that they don't like.

No it isn't.

Look at research. There are plenty of people who hate DJ's, period. Granted most of them noe rely on iPods and satellite radio, but goood, bad or indifferent, there is a segmant that wants NO DJs. And it's growing.<P ID="signature">______________

I'll also bet there are plenty of people who hate music, which is why talk stations like WPGB are doing so well. In fact, I'll bet that no matter what scenario you describe, there are "plenty" of people who like it, and "plenty" who don't.

The thing is, any radio station that drops disc jockeys because "plenty" of listeners don't like them will soon find that they can't sell any commercials, because "plenty" of listeners don't like them, either.

We're now into one of your infamous endless loop threads.

In the words of Roberto Duran (no relation to Duran Duran), "no mas, no mas."<P ID="signature">______________
