If not on FM, why not on HD channel?

OK, so we are all agreed that KFI is not going to move to FM in the nearfuture (we can all agree on this, yes?), why wouldn't CC put it on one of their FM HD channels. While it is true that the number of HD radio users numbers somewhere in the dozens, it is a growing band and it wouldn't cost much to put it there. What could it hurt?

Is it because even the nearly invisible step of simulcasting on an HD channel still impies some level of weakness in its AM band properties and thus may still trigger a write-down of the asset, which they desperately want to avoid?

I have no horse in this race because I am among the millions of radio listeners who do not have HD radio, but if the move to FM is long-term inevitable (which I believe the suits at CC must believe if they have any clue at all), then why not take the baby step now?

In the SF Bay Area, CBS was simulcasting All News KCBS-AM on 106.9 HD2 for over a year - then moved the KCBS simulcast to HD1 when it was clear that the KFRC Classic Hits format was not doing well.

Granted that this is the Bay Area, where a number of AM stations are still in the Top 10 - but I haven't heard that this move has seriously devalued KCBS-AM. It has seriously helped KCBS's ratings, both 12+ and in 25-54.
