If Power Is Really Gone, Who Goes Hip Hop?

Before Power the only Hip Hop station you could pull in around Myrtle Beach was Coast 97.3 which you can still pull out of Wilmington, NC. Also just recently 92.5 flipped to Hip Hop as The Box which can also be picked up in Myrtle Beach.

So if Power is really gone who will replace them? Would Quatum who owns Mix 97.7, Rock 107.1, Gator 107.9, 104.9 Bob FM. Doubt that. Maybe Nextmedia would who owns Star 92.1, 96.1 KZQ, WRNN 99.5, Wave 104.1.

92.5 The Box is strong after Glenn Bay Road. In Murrells Inlet its a little weak but heading towards Pawleys it picks up good. But after Glenn Bay Road you can pick up 92.5 up strong like a local. Citadel should consider moving z 93 to 96.9 as that Charleston signal is also strong in Myrtle Beach.

I'd go with 104.9/100.7 as the urban AC station. They have the best signal for the format (100.7 serving all the rural areas in Williamsburg and Georgetown that listen to that format), and I think they would do good promotion. Run the station like Star in Charleston, and you're printing money.

I really don't get this switch for 100.3. I guess they want to compete against 97.7 (like what 92.5 tried to do with 95SX).

The Box has a good signal, as you can hear them up in North Myrtle even during a minor skip. 96.9 going to Z-93's format probably would never happen, but would be a good idea. You could take Z-93 (huge in the metro Charleston area), and make them a powerhouse in the rural parts of the Lowcountry that can't get 93.3. Even the Big DM still gets about a 0.6 in Charleston.

However, Wolf and WEZL are the only two country stations, and if Wolf switched, WEZL would be the only country station, and would take all the ratings, as they would have a 10-11 share easy. That's why that would never happen. WTMA going to FM would be more likely.

104.9 isn't played on 100.7 anymore. Easy 105.9 is played on 100.7 now. As for 104.9 going Urban AC I don't count on it as they are doing fine with Bob FM.

As for 100.3 being CHR once again is just plan stupid.

98.5 is full on mainstream Urban/hip-hop now when before they were strictly Urban AC when hip-hop Power was at 100.3.

I think its safe to say URBAN AC doesn't work for Myrtle Beach. Q107.1 and 98.5 KISS FM has tried and went no where.

I thought 98.5 was Urban AC for years, and usually landed in top 5 or higher in the ratings. This depite the poor signal (it's been improved some now). medocre presentation and terrible commercial load.

No, they've always been Urban Contemporary playing mostly hit R&B and old school, but Hip-Hop too. Since POWER is gone, they've gone back to this direction.

It was and it did. Hip-hop is a recent phenomenon on 98.5. Maybe three or four years ago. In the late 90s, Hot 93 (now The Team) was the only hip-hop station (really rhythmic CHR). Somewhere along the line they ended up going mainstream CHR. And adding Hot 100.

98.5 improved their signal. I didn't know they were no longer 6000 watts. WSEA was also 6000 watts.
