If The Bull Ever Got Its Act Together...

If 94-9 The Bull was able to sound like the top country stations in other markets, it probably could rack up some decent ratings. In my opinion, Kicks is pretty vulnerable, especially in middays and evenings, and to some extent in afternoon drive.

Even the Charlotte and Greensboro country stations sound better than those in Atlanta.

Right as usual, Roddy!
WKHX has ALWAYS been a poorly executed country station - when it has won it was by default.
Remember back when BoyBob ran Y106? It was cookin' with gas.....ask Littlejohn.....it was a full tilt country powerhouse. Even Johnny's audio made the KHX engineering staff tremble.....it was awesome - loud and powerful.(Bridges brought "real processing" to ATL - before Y106 it was just a lazy Optimod market.)Y106 beat the crappola outta KHX in those days. When BoyBob left it went downhill but even Bill Wise had a sucessful year or two with it - better than McGinnley and Schrutt ever dreamed.....
I have said time and again that KHX is ripe for the pluckin'.......if only someone with one iota of showbiz sense would come and put on "the big show."

Not a clever bone between the two of them - Schrutt & McGinley!

In the glory days, the consultants used to hammer home a couple of points about Cap Cities (the then owner of WKHX). It was a boring three - in - a- row country jukebox. But, it was a well - done three in a row. Never lose sight of the fact that it was well done. The other was, Schrutt's a jerk. But, he's not a stupid jerk. Never lose sight of the fact that your competitor ain't dumb, or you'll hurt yourself.

Neal was - and likely still is - the master of guerillia radio warfare. He was privvy to Schrutt's moods and actions about as quicjkly as they were made... and he cashed in on every one. A fair amount of what went on Y's air was aimed specifically at getting under Norm's skin, because it was known that he would become Very Unhappy, and the staff felt it. One good way to improve morale in your store is to destroy it in the other guy's, and then let your staff see how the other half lives. That was a fun place to work, it did better in about every respect than it had any right to do.

The sound had Soft Hearted John (Marino, currently VP of Science and Technology at the NAB) to thank for the most part. We figured The Bushman had the best sound in the industry, and started by emulating it and adjusting for the (really bad in some instances) product we had. I don't think it ever beat 96 for really awesome sound, but we managed to keep it real close and still play the Kenny and Dolly slop we had from time to time without having it come totally apart.

Amithe, you make the same mistake as a lot of folks in your post. I can't speak to McGinley, but to a degree I can to Schrutt. He's a lot of things, but stupid is >not< among them... the man is very intelligent. I'm given to believe he has smoothed over some of his rough edges since he started repping talent, which I'd consider necessary. But don't go compete with him and figure to beat him cos he's dumb.. he'll eat your lunch real quick.

I've never met Norm Schrutt and never seen his IQ score - can't say I know McGinnley's score either. And if "getting somewhere" counts then I would have to agree with you Littlejohn - both have done quite well.
Here's the problem. Radio has become this huge chess game. And we have many players who are quite skilled at making the moves and avoiding checkmate. But many of us are tired of playing chess. The opponent's moves are trite and utterly predictable. The strategists are now the bean counters - management has become ONLY the business of dollars and cents and has lost the capability to develope and nurture talent.
ShowBiz gentleman. That is the game we are playing. Bring the people a "Big Station" and they will come........

Prior to ABC taking over, Norm Schrutt held a meeting with all the staff of Y106 and said (verbatim) "I am God".

I kid you not.

When you buy up all your competition to be Top Dog.....I guess that is smart after all! That way, in the words of Mr. Schrutt, "I control my destiny"!

Then Bob Neal must be smiling at CC Atlanta...Cox is on top, CC is rock-bottom. And better yet...he didn't have to destroy anything. CC destroyed itself. Thinking about CC flipping a top 5 station to a bottom tier station must give him great joy.

Point is...94.9 needs to flip...now. Of course...CC won't do it.

A five year old child could run CC better. A dog could run CC better. A robot could run CC better.
