Christmas Music Overload
> It's not even December yet and how many stations are
> overloading our ears with Holiday cheer?
A former co-worker of mine was the interim PD of a large market talk radio station, and was asked about radio stations selling informercial time in large quantities.
He called infomercials "the crack cocaine of radio sales". Well, Christmas music is the "crack cocaine" of radio programming around the holidays.
Since AC stations, in particular, started seeing spikes in listenership at this time of year due to flipping to yuletide tunes, everybody and their brother is trying it. I suspect we'll see that overload kick into gear this year, and you won't see as many markets with 4 or 5 (!) Christmas music stations.
Here in Northeast Ohio, we currently have 2 of them (not counting AMs or satellite-fed formats that are flipping). One is the market's traditional softer AC, WDOK/102.1, and the other is Salem's CCM WFHM/95.5 The Fish. I'm not sure if we'll get any more...I don't think WDOK sister WQAL/104.1 will flip out of Hot AC, but who knows if CC's WMVX/106.5 will take that flank for that company.
